Upcoming Cars between 5-8 Lakh

The Rs 5-8 Lakh segment caters to India's ever-growing middle class. With more and more people being able to afford an automobile every year, this is one of the most hot and heppening segments of 2014

Maruti-Suzuki Swift Facelift

Expected Launch: Early 2014

Expected Price: Rs 5.00-7.00 Lakh

2014 Suzuki Swift

The Suzuki Swift has been one of India’s most favorite cars in recent times. After it’s launch in 2005 with a 1.3 Litre petrol engine and then in 2007 with the Fiat sourced 1.3 Litre Multijet diesel, Swift was refreshed completely in 2011 with a fresh exterior and a newer better interior. The new refresh will stick to it’s current body shape while adding bits and pieces to both the exterior and interior. The biggest change, will be the integration of daytime running lights into the front bumper along with a redesigned grille and headlamp package. The tail lights too will get a redesign with the possibility of a full LED tail lamp package being integrated into the Swift. The interior too will get a nip/tuck with a better infotainment system with an inbuilt LCD screen with a navigation option. On the whole, expect the swift to get a little more expensive than it is now but only by about Rs 10-15 thousand.

Hyundai i20

Expected Launch: Late 2014

Expected Price: Rs 5.00-8.00 Lakh

2014 Hyundai i20

The Hyundai i20 was launched in India in 2008 but has failed to move the Indian audiences the way we expected it to. Although the i20 has several class leading features that are still missing from most other cars in it’s segment, the car still hasn’t shown the blistering sales figures it deserves. The new i20 will conform to Hyundai’s fluidic design statement but is set to be much more edgy and futuristic than it currently is. Expect the i20 to come loaded with a ton of gizmos and gadgets and to be priced competitively. While the new i20 will be available in both petrol and diesel variants, we suspect Hyundai will bring in a new generation of automatic transmissions for both the petrol and the diesel models. Expect the new i20 to Premier in India in the latter half of 2014.

New Tata Vista

Expected Launch: Late 2014

Expected Price: Rs 5.00-7.00 Lakh

The Tata Vista or the Indica Vista as it is known has been in the market since 2008. With healthy sales figures and variant introductions through the years it has stayed quite fresh in terms of both design and styling. However, the Vista is all set to get a complete makeover soon with all new and much sharper styling features giving it an edgy look. The new Vista will also in turn spawn a new sub 4-meter sedan. The engine options will remain the same with the 1.3 Litre Diesel Multijet engine being the most popular engine on offer. The recently launched Vista D90 already has a boatload of gizmos and gadgets like Satellite Navigation and a touch screen infotainment interface and expect the new generation Vista to get all that and more. Tata is also working closely with Jayem Automotives Ltd. to make a turbocharged 120Bhp petrol version of the Vista but it is unlikely to see that being put into production.

Honda Jazz

Expected Launch: Mid 2014

Expected Price: Rs 5.5-8.0 Lakh

2014 Honda Jazz

The old Honda Jazz one of our most favorite hatchbacks due to its cavernous space and fantastic 1.2 Litre i-VTEC engine. A humongous price tag and the lack of a diesel engine though was the reason for it’s eventual downfall and even after Honda cut prices, it still did not sell. Now though, with Honda’s new 1.5 Litre Diesel i-DTEC engine combined with the Jazz’s new edgy Euro Civic type looks, it is all set to take the Indian market by storm. Honda has to ensure they price the Jazz well this time around so as to attract the Volkswagen Polo and Suzuki Swift customer. The New Jazz will also feature a 1.2 Litre i-Vtec petrol engine like the one featured in the Brio. Expect the Jazz to come very highly equipped in terms of features with a lot of shared components to the newly launched Honda City.

Fiat Grande Punto Evo

Expected Launch: Mid 2014

Expected Price: Rs 5.00-8.00 Lakh

2014 Fiat Punto EVO

The Grande Punto Evo, a facelifted version of the Grande Punto we get in India should have made it to India early last year but due to Fiat’s new independent identity, the launch of this new car has been delayed. However, the Punto Evo will make it to India sometime in the next year. Featuring a reworked front bumper and reworked headlamps, the Punto Evo looks much sharper than the current generation Punto. However, some of the Maserati-esque looks have been sacrificed and the front does look a little more cluttered than before. The rear too gets a similar rework with new tail lamps and a new bumper. Engines wise, the 1.2 and 1.4 Litre petrol and the 1.3 Litre Multijet Diesel will continue to power the Punto Evo.

Skoda Fabia Facelift

Expected Launch: Late 2014

Expected Price: Rs 5.50-7.50 Lakh

2014 Skoda Fabia

The Skoda Fabia has been as it is for almost half a decade now and is next in line for Skoda’s nip/tuck treatment. Although the Fabia still looks fresh, the new fabia will take cues from the likes of the Skoda Superb and the Skoda Octavia and will feature much sharper styling. As most petrolheads do, we hope Skoda brings the Fabia RS to India with its mean styling and power packed motor but that is quite unlikely. The Fabia will be priced to go on head to head with the likes of the Suzuki Swift and will come with both a petrol and diesel power plant that will be carried forward from the current generation of the Fabia.

Maruti-Suzuki SX4

Expected Launch: Late 2014

Expected Price: Rs 7-10 Lakh

2014 Suzuki SX4 Sedan

Maruti’s new SX4 sedan will be based on the new SX4 hatchback that you see above. The new SX4 features curvier styling cues and a larger headlamp and grilles, making it look as contemporary as its biggest rival, the Hyundai Verna. However, the SX4 has never really been a strong contender in its segment even with an option for both petrol and diesel engines and the new SX4 may not do much to entice the segment either. However, if priced correctly, expect many current Maruti loyalists to upgrade to this much-awaited refresh.

Hyundai Grand i10 Saloon

Expected Launch: Mid 2014

Expected Price: Rs. 5-8 Lakh

2014 Hyundai Grand i10 Sedan

The newly launched Hyundai i10 Grand hatchback has shown great success in the Indian market and as per our information, the new Hyundai Grand i10 sedan is nearly ready for launch too. The Grand saloon will be Hyundai’s first foray into the hotly contested sub-4 meter sedan category. The Grand i10 will go up against the Suzuki Swift Dzire, the Indigo CS and the Honda Amaze. The Grand i10 will be available in both petrol and diesel engine options with the petrol getting an automatic option too. Expect the Grand i10 sedan to be crammed full of gadgets and gizmos to sway the price sensitive Indian audience.

Tata Manza/ Manza CS

Expected Launch: Early 2014 / Late 2014

Expected Price: Rs 6-8 Lakh/ Rs 5-7 Lakh

2014 Tata Manza

The Tata Manza is up for a major facelift along with it’s hatchback version, the Vista. Expect edgy headlamps like those seen on the concept version above to dominate Tata’s new design language. The new Manza will also spawn a new Manza CS which might replace the current Indigo CS or continue to sell alongside it as is the case with the Vista and the older Indica. The Manza will feature the same 1.3 Litre, Multijet diesel that does duty in the current Manza. If rumors are to be believed, the new Tata Manza will also feature an automatic transmission mated to the 1.4 Litre petrol engine. As is the case with the current Manza, expect class leading space and a whole host of gadgets to make the Manza a good value for money product.

Skoda Rapid Facelift

Expected Launch: Early 2014

Expected Price: Rs 7-11 Lakh

2014 Skoda Rapid

The facelifted Skoda Rapid takes a lot of cues from the newly launched Octavia. With its square stance and chiseled headlamps, new grille and bumper, the new Skoda Rapid looks much better then the outgoing version. The new Rapid will also come with a slightly reworked interior and a reworked set of wheels making it look fresh and interesting. The new Rapid will share the same engines as the current range does and might even add the 1.2 TSi engine replacing the 1.6 Litre Petrol engine available today. The Diesel engines will remain the same with the 1.6 Litre Diesel doing duty in the new facelifted version. Expect Skoda to increase the prices of the facelifted Rapid by a few thousand rupees. The Rapid will go up against the likes of the Volkswagen Vento, the Suzuki SX4 and the Hyundai Verna amongst others.

Hyundai ix35

Expected Launch: early 2014

Expected Price: Rs 7-9 Lakh

2014 Hyundai ix35

Hyundai’s compact SUV, the ix35 will make to Indian shores in the first half of 2014 going head to head with the likes of Maruti-Suzuki’s XA Alpha and the Ford Ecosport. The ix35 looks distinctively like a Hyundai with its fluidic design language.

At first glance, the ix35 looks like an expanded Verna with a similar split grille and swept back headlamps. There are several little chrome details that make the ix35 look much more expensive than it actually is while giving it a mature and grown up feel. The ix35’s compact size along with it’s striking design will definitely strike a cord with eager Indian audiences.

Mechanically, the ix35 will feature the same small 1.1 Litre Crde engine that does duty in Hyundai’s new Grand i10 but with a greater power output. We also expect Hyundai to offer the 1.6 Litre Crde engine that they currently offer in the Hyundai Verna as a range topping engine.

Expect the ix35 to be priced extremely competitively with prices for the petrol starting at just under 7 lakh and the base model diesel costing not more than Rs 7.25-7.5 lakh.

Mahindra Compact Suv

Expected Launch: Late 2014

Expected Price: Rs 6-9 Lakh

2014 Mahindra Small SUV

Although details are sketchy about the compact SUV project, a recent concept from SsangYong called the SIV 1 may provide us with clues on what the Mahindra Small SUV could look like. Slated to launch with the same mechanicals as the Mahindra Quanto, the new compact SUV from Mahindra is internally referred to as the S102 project.

The S102 will feature modern styling, which will be influenced by the SIV 1 concept from SsangYong while staying true to a few Mahindra traits like their distinctive grille. The S102 will also feature Daytime Running Lights like the XUV500 and will share a lot of internal gadgetry with it’s bigger sibling too.

If the success of the XUV500 is anything to go by, the S102 compact SUV is sure to be a runaway success when it gets launched at the end of 2014. Considering Mahindra’s track record with killer pricing strategies, we expect the compact SUV to be priced around the Rs 6-9 lakh segment with the top of the line SUV offering 4WD and maybe even an automatic transmission.

Honda Mobilio

Expected Launch: Late 2014

Expected Price: Between Rs 8-12 Lakh

2014 Honda Mobilio

Based on the Honda Brio hatchback and the Honda Amaze sedan, the Mobilio is Honda’s answer to the Maruti-Suzuki Ertiga and the soon to be launched Hyundai MPV. The Mobilio was officially introduced at the 2013 Indonesia International Motor Show and will be offered with seven seats.

The Honda Mobilio will be powered by Honda’s all-new 1.5 Litre i-Dtec engine which produces 100PS of peak power and 200Nm of peak torque. The Mobilio will also have a petrol option and will be powered by the 1.5 Litre i-Vtec engine that currently does duty in the Honda City. The Honda Mobilio might also be offered with a factory LPG/CNG option but details on that front seem to be a little sketchy. The Honda Mobilio will be available in both manual and automatic versions with the Automatic expected to have features like paddle shifters.

At first glance, the Mobilio will look very similar to the Brio and the Amaze but will feature a larger grille with a more prominent chrome styling feature running across the front of the car. The rear though will be completely new with large tail lights and an angular recess to house the license plate. The floating D-Pillar and the kink in the window line along the side will help to break the visual bulk of the Honda Mobilio.

The Honda Mobilio will share its dashboard with Brio and Amaze although we assume the Mobilio will be offered with a two-tone beige interior so as to give it a slightly enhanced feel of luxury. Expect Mobilio to be priced between 8-12 Lakh when it is introduced in the second half of 2014. In fact, considering Honda's recent price strategies, we wont be surprised if a base version of the Honda Mobilio is priced even lower.

Datsun Go+

Expected Launch: Late 2014

Expected Price: Rs 5-8 Lakh

2014 Datsun Go Plus

Datsun unveiled it’s second car, the Go+ in Indonesia last month. Based on the Go hatchback, the Go+ is a 7-seater MPV that will make it’s way to India in 2014. The GO+ is based on the Go hatchback platform and features similar styling. The Go+ will share most of its components with the Go hatchback including identical styling and powertrain options. The Go+ will also share the same wheelbase as that of the hatchback at 2450mm but will feature an extra 210mm length to accommodate the extra seats. The overall length though will still be under the 4-meter mark, which will entitle the Go+ to be entitled for excise benefits when it reaches Indian shores.

Just as with the exterior, the Go+ will share its interior with the Go hatchback. This means that the Go+ too will have a semi-bench seat format and will feature a dashboard mounted gearshift lever. The Datsun Go+ will also feature the Datsun Mobile Docking Station for smartphone integration. The big difference in the interior will be the addition of two extra seats in the third row. We believe these seats will be removable so as to facilitate extra baggage space to suit every customer preference.

The Go+ will be made at Nissan’s Chennai plant and is expected to be priced extremely competitively. We expect the Datsun Go+ price to be between Rs 5-8 lakh with entry-level models priced as low as Rs 5.5-6 Lakh. If priced correctly, the Datsun Go+ will definitely make a dent in the MPV segment and the Indian automotive scene en masse.

Hyundai’s new MPV

Expected Launch: mid 2014

Expected Price: Rs 8-12 Lakh

2014 Hyundai Hexa Space

Hyundai’s MPV was on our ‘Cars for 2013’ list too but sadly hasn’t made it to India yet. However, the Hyundai’s new MPV will certainly make it to Indian during the first half of 2014. Based on the Hexa Space Concept, code named the HND-7 that caught many eyeballs at the 2012 Indian Auto Expo, Hyundai’s new MPV is said to be in final stages of development and testing.

The Hexa Space derived production MPV will feature the same fluidic design elements like a large grille and swept back headlamps. We expect the new MPV to derive its mechanical components from the Grand i10. The Grand i10 platform will also derive a sub-4 meter saloon next year along with the MPV.

Although no information is known about the upcoming MPV, we assume the car will be have a seven seat option and will feature both petrol and diesel variants. The MPV will also be offered with both Petrol and Diesel power train options and will also be available in both manual and automatic gearbox options. It is unclear if the Hyundai MPV will be under 4 meters, however we do expect a range topping version to have some of the mechanicals from cars like the Hyundai Verna too. Expect the Hyundai MPV to be one of the biggest hot sellers of 2014. We expect the new Hyundai MPV to be priced between Rs 8-12 Lakh.

Renault’s new MPV

Expected Launch: Late 2014

Expected Price: Rs 8-12 Lakh

2014 Renault Lodgy

Renault has tasted success with the Duster and is now all set to enter the MPV sector with its Lodgy MUV. With plans to bring out the Lodgy MPV by the end of 2014 and a second MPV, which will be a badge engineered version based on the Nissan Evalia, Renault is serious about entering the highly competitive MPV market.

The Lodgy, originally marketed as a Dacia in certain European markets, is a 7-seater MPV with similar underpinnings to the likes of the Renault Duster. Codenamed the J92, the Lodgy will be a key MPV to take on the established contenders like the Toyota Innova and the Mahindra Xylo. The Lodgy should be about 4500mm long and feature ample amounts of interior space for both passengers and luggage.

Mechanically, the Lodgy will share it’s engine offerings with the Renault Duster. Expect the Lodgy to be available in both Petrol and two Diesel engine options. The Lodgy will also share most of the Duster’s interior trim like dashboard and seats so as to minimize costs. Expect the Lodgy to be priced extremely competitively between the range of Rs 8-12 Lakh and an even cheaper entry level model aimed at fleet and taxi operators.
