Ford's compact sedan is due in a few months and we've had a detailed look at it. Here are six key facts you need to know about the new Figo Aspire

1. New 1.2-litre petrol engine

The Figo Aspire will get a new 1.2-litre Ti-VCT petrol engine that delivers more power and torque than the petrol engine in the Figo. For those who don’t know, the Figo petrol engine is of the same displacement and produces 71PS of power and 102Nm of torque. It will also be more efficient than this unit. The current Figo hatchback has an ARAI certified efficiency figure of 15.6 kmpl so expect the Aspire to better it. Since no figures have been revealed about this new engine, we can’t give you any specifics yet. The diesel unit meanwhile will be the one from the Fiesta (91PS/204Nm). It returns 25.01kmpl in the ARAI tests. Expect it to be better on the lighter Figo Aspire.

2. Six-Speed DCT transmission

The petrol Figo Aspire will come mated to a six-speed Dual Clutch Transmission. The automatic is the same unit from the EcoSport but in the Figo Aspire, comes mated to the smaller 1.2-litre petrol engine. The DCT unit is smooth and shifts quickly but is known to make the presence of that lack of torque felt in the EcoSport. Since it will come mated to the smaller engine in the Aspire, it will be interesting to see if Ford gets the gear ratios right this time. What you need to know is this gearbox is a segment first as others offer CVTs and torque converters which in most cases can be considered as lesser tech.

3. Class leading safety

Ford takes safety seriously, at least on the top of the line variant. The Figo Aspire will come with a total of six airbags, two in front, two side and two cutain. It’s a segment first again and kudos to the carmaker for introducing it into the segment. What we didn’t like in the brief one-on-one with the Figo Aspire is the build quality that seems to have dropped compared to say the Figo.  The doors are light and the panels flex every time the door is shut. We’d wait for our test car though as this is a pre-production model.

4. Leather seats

Again segment first, leather seats are on offer on the top of the line variant. The single car on show was hounded by a lot of people so we’d not be able to comment on the space on offer just yet, but we can on the comfort level. The seats offer excellent cushioning which we believe could be the best in class. Scoops in the backrests of the front seats will release extra legroom and the high set seats means you will not be seated knee-up.

5. Mobile docking station

Not offered on the top-end variant as you get your Bluetooth connect to the infotainment system but on the lesser variants, a smart dock in place of the infotainment screen to store, dock and charge your phone/navigation system/MP3 player. Again a segment first and a nice touch as the smart phone is increasingly becoming a device used in the car.

6. Reduced cost of ownership

We’d have to wait and find out for ourselves on this one but Ford execs say that the Figo Aspire’s cost of ownership will be lower than other Fords in this segment (Figo and Classic). An example we got was of the wing mirrors. If you accidentally knock the mirror for instance, damaging the casing but not the mirror and the mechanism, you will get just the casing replaced instead of the whole unit. Ford says that many such efforts have been made with the aim of increasing the resale value of Ford cars in the long run.
