UM Motorcycles have imported two motorcycles – a 125cc step through and a 150cc commuter – apparently for R&D purposes into India, ahead of the American firm’s debut launch in India.

When approached by ZigWheels, UM officials have expressed “inability to comment on R&D issues” but have disclosed that the company’s first launch in India will be a cruiser, and a launch is expected sometime in June.

Florida-based UM Motorcycles has a 50:50 joint venture with Lohia Auto Industries and the firm is almost ready with their first product launch in India – a 400cc cruiser, which has been developed specifically for the Indian market.

UM Renegade Commando

UM is targeting the youth with this 400cc cruiser which will be priced competitively against the likes of Royal Enfield. The cruiser will be based on the UM Renegade Commando, but will be heavily influenced by high-end cruisers from established American brands, according to one source. But what is clear is that the company may not be relying solely on its premium products in the Indian market.

The two imports point to the fact that UM may be looking at introducing smaller capacity motorcycles in their product line-up, attempting to tap the volumes in the commuter and executive commuter segments as well.

With as many as 75 dealerships planned across India, and the factory in Kashipur, Uttarakhand also doubling up as an export hub, UM seems to be betting big on India. The Nitrox 150 and the Flash 125 are already available in UM’s global product portfolio. With no word on a launch date as yet, we’re not sure if UM is planning to introduce these two products as they are, or if they will be modified to suit the Indian market. One thing is certain, with the dealer network and production capacity UM is aiming for in India, it makes perfect sense to have some mass market products to grab a foothold in the Indian market.
