We take a close look at the monthly sales figures of two-wheeler manufacturers in the country and see how they performed in June 2014

Two-wheeler sales report June 2014

June proved to be another fruitful month for two-wheeler manufacturers in the country. Sales report for the month of June 2014 is out and every manufacturer has reported a positive growth in terms of sales. Hero MotoCorp ruled the roost in terms of volumes, while Mahindra Two Wheelers yet again notched the highest percentage growth.  

Talking about numbers, Hero MotoCorp sold 5,41,594 units in June 2014 compared to 5,02,279units in the corresponding month last year. This means Hero has registered an overall growth of eight per cent. Also the country’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer managed to sell 17,15,129 units in Q1 of this fiscal year which is an impressive growth of 10 per cent with respect to last year’s fiscal. Hero also commenced production at its fourth production facility at Neemrana in Rajasthan last month. The new production plant has a total installed capacity of 7,50,000 units thus increasing the total installed capacity of Hero to 7.65 million two-wheeler units. Hero expects that the new plant alongwith the extension of the excise duty will further boost its overall sales. 

Bajaj Discover 125

Bajaj Auto were able to successful in maintaining positive growth as sales were on a decline in early part of the year. Bajaj registered sales of 2,62,202 units of motorcycles in June 2014 with respect to 2,54,544 units it had managed in the same month last year. The percentage of growth is a mere three per cent but Bajaj will be happy given the fact that sales have increased despite the fact that all is not well between the management and the workers at its Chakan facility. Exports witnessed a growth of 12 per cent as Bajaj Auto exported 1,35,074 units in June 2014. 

Mahindra Centuro

Buoyed by the success its latest commuter offering, the Centuro has received Mahindra Two Wheelers’ recorded yet another positive month in terms of overall sales. Overall volume growth for the month of March 2014 stood at an impressive 83 per cent. Mahindra sold 14,389 units in June 2014, as against 7,849 units in the corresponding month previous year. Mahindra is all set to a launch a new 110cc scooter soon and this should result in sales growing further.

Commenting on the performance, Viren Popli, Chief of Operations, Mahindra Two Wheelers said, “We are happy about the sustained growth momentum of our flagship brand, the Centuro. We thank our customers for their continued confidence and will strive to further delight them with exciting new offerings in the coming months”.

The country’s second largest two-wheeler manufacturer had yet another fabulous outing in terms of sale as Honda registered an overall growth of 28 per cent for the month of June 2014. Honda managed to sell 3,23,224 units of two-wheelers in the month of June 2014 as compared to 2,32,271 units in June last year. Honda also recorded its highest sale in a single day in India last month when it sold 7,500units during Rath Yatra in Gujarat. Also the Japanese two-wheeler giant has registered a Q1 growth of 34 per cent which is 2.5 times of the total growth registered by the whole two-wheeler industry. Honda also announced that it will be launching a new 160cc motorcycle in the festive season and with sales of the newly Activa 125 getting streamlined sales of Honda is sure to get boosted further.

Yamaha FZ-S FI Version 2.0

Yamaha Motor India Sales Pvt. Ltd. also had a successful outing in the month of June 2014 as it registered a growth of 14.3% in domestic sales. The Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer sold 40,666 units last in comparison to 35,561 units it managed to sell in June 2013.  According to Yamaha, the recently launched scooter, Alpha is among the main reasons for its rise in sales and it expects it to be further magnified by the recently launched FZ Version 2.0 and FZ-S Version 2.0.

Elaborating on the results, Roy Kurian, Vice President – Sales & Marketing, Yamaha Motor India Sales Pvt. Ltd, said, “The incessant growth numbers are a sign of Yamaha’s robust business plan and strategic customer engagement programs. The month has ended on a very positive note for us as we launched new variants under the FZ series - FZ Version 2.0 and FZ-S Version 2.0 yesterday. We have had other launches as well this year, however, Alpha, launched at the Auto expo, continues to be a fundamental growth driver for us. This is indeed the reviving times for the industry as we have an industry-friendly and an absolute government at centre.”

TVS Star City+

TVS Motor Company’s success run continued as it registered a 23 per cent growth in the two-wheeler segment for the month of June 2014. The Hosur based manufacturer managed to sell 1,93,758 units in June 2014 as compared to 1,57,351 units in the corresponding month last year. TVS will pleased with the performance of it scooter sales, which grew by an impressive 46 per cent owing to the Jupiter and recently launched updated TVS Wego scooter. Exports showed a growth of 24 per cent as TVS exported 32,290 units in June 2014 as compared to 26,047 in the same month last year. TVS expects these numbers to further swell with the recently launched commuter offering, the Star City+.
