Two-wheeler sales maintain positive momentum in September 2014

September was yet another good month for all the major two-wheeler manufacturers in the country with sales showing positive growth

Honda Splendor Pro Classic

Two-wheeler manufacturer’s benefited from the festive season as they registered a positive growth in terms of sales for the month of September 2014. Hero MotoCorp like always ruled the roost with respect to sales as it sold more than 6 lakh units. The country’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer had managed to sell 4,68,670 units in the corresponding month last year which means Hero has registered a percentage growth of over 30 per cent with respect to sales. The Indian two-wheeler giant also managed to sell a whopping 1.7 lakh units in the first six days of Navratri. Hero expects sales to further strengthen in October owing to Dusserha and Diwali. It also added that it has lined-up over 10 new product launches, including refreshes and variants, which will reach all dealerships across the country during the festive season.

Honda Activa 125

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. (HMSI) also had a great outing in the month of September, 2014 as it registered its highest ever monthly sales. Honda dispatched 4.38 lakh units of two-wheeler in September 2014 as opposed to 328,907 units sold in the corresponding month last year. It was also the first occasion that the Japanese two-wheeler giant breached the four lakh sales figure mark and it registered a percentage growth of 33 per cent. It also hiked up its domestic share to 27 per cent. 

Elaborating on the sales, Yadvinder S. Guleria, Vice President - Sales & Marketing, HMSI, “September 2014 has been a phenomenal month for Honda. Our customer base has reached 18 million. We have recorded our highest ever sales of 4.38 lakhs this month. From Gujarat to Kolkata, we are witnessing overwhelming customer response this Navratras and expect the cheer to continue in October’14 as well.”

Yamaha Fazer FI

Yamaha Motors India also registered steady growth as sales grew by 27 per cent. The Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer sold 59,325 units in September 2014 as against 46,790 units sold in September last year in the domestic market. It expects sales to further grow in October during the festive season with its recently launched 150cc offering Yamaha FZ FI and Fazer FI.

Commenting on the results, Roy Kurian, Vice President – Sales & Marketing, Yamaha Motor India Sales Pvt. Ltd, said, “Our scooter offerings, especially ‘Alpha’, have been a catalyst in giving us good numbers over the past few months and now with addition to our popular motorcycle lineup with FZ, FZ-S and Fazer Version 2.0, we have strengthened our presence in the 150cc deluxe segment. Also, with the festive season approaching, we have planned for special offers for our dear customers including lower down- payments, easy financing schemes etc. on purchase of any Yamaha two-wheeler.”

Suzuki Motorcycle India Pvt. Ltd which is on a revival path in our two-wheeler market managed to grab 7.3 percentage growth with respect to sales. The Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer sold 44,873 units in September 2014 as opposed to 41,799 units in the corresponding month last year. It expects sales to further amplify owing to its new 110cc scooter Let’s and the new 150cc offering the Gixxer. 

Speaking on its performance, Atul Gupta, Executive Vice President, SMIPL, said “We have received a good response from the market for all our products. The growing customer satisfaction has led to positive word-of-mouth in the market. Building on the existing goodwill, the Gixxer and Let’s are gaining strong foothold in the market. We will continue to give the best to our customers.”

TVS Jupiter

TVS too made progress reflecting an overall growth of 28 per cent in September 2014. Sales for TVS rose from 1,89,609 units in September 2013 to 2,41,668 units in last month. Scooter sales of the company grew by 63 per cent and this can be credited to its scooter offering the Jupiter, Wego and recently launched Scooty Zest. Motorcycles sales grew by 18 per cent increasing from 83,043 units in the month of September 2013 to 98,052 units in September 2014. Apart from hiking sales in the domestic market, TVS also raised its exports as the company dispatched 24,221 units of two-wheelers for the export market a growth of 15 per cent compared to the corresponding to the last year. 

Bajaj Discover 150

September was also a rewarding month for Bajaj Auto as it registered a percentage growth of seven per cent in terms of sales. The Chakan based two-wheeler manufacturer sold 3,47,010 units in September 2014 with respect to 3,23,879 units it had manages to dispatch in the same month last year. Bajaj also said that its recently launched 150cc offering - the Bajaj Discover 150 has been well received by consumers as it sold over 28,000 units in September 2014. 

Mahindra Gusto

Mahindra Two Wheelers Ltd. registered a growth of 5.6 per cent in terms of overall sales. Mahindra sold 17,565 units in September 2014 with respect to 16,619 units during the same time period last year. Exports for Mahindra stood at 946 units. Mahindra will be betting on the new Gusto 110cc scooter to further magnify its sales during the festive season. 

Commenting on the performance, Viren Popli, Chief of Operations, Mahindra Two Wheelers said, “We are happy with the positive growth of our two wheeler sector this month at the back of the improved performance of the automotive industry. We are hopeful that the upcoming festive season will bring in greater cheer for Mahindra especially with the launch of our new global scooter Gusto”.
