We take a closer look to find out which of the two-wheeler manufacturers ruled the sales charts this April

Hero MotoCorp Splendor iSmart

After ending the April 2013 – March 2014 financial year on a high with most manufacturers recording hefty growth in sales, April 2014 too has proven to be similarly rewarding. Most manufacturers seem to have recorded a positive grown in sales with Hero MotoCorp leading the pack thanks to the 571,054 units sold in the month of April as opposed to 499,113 units in the same month last year, amounting to a 14.4 per cent hike in growth. This is also the highest-ever non-festive season monthly sales for Hero MotoCorp, surpassing the previous highest of 557,890 units sold in the month of May last year. Mr. Anil Dua, Senior Vice-President (Marketing & Sales), Hero MotoCorp Ltd said, “The latest addition to the Splendor family - Splendor iSmart with revolutionary i3S technology - has made an immediate impact in the market and we are fast ramping up production to meet the growing market demand for this new bike. Brand Splendor keeps going from strength to strength even as our other motorcycle and scooter models keep contributing large volumes to our overall kitty.”

Honda CB Shine

If Hero MotoCorp ruled the charts in the number of units sold, with an escalation of 21 per cent, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India topped the sales charts in terms of percentage growth. HMSI managed to sell 3,13,942 units in April 2014 out of which 1,75,837 were scooters and 1,38,105 were motorcycles. It is also during this time that the CB Shine became the highest selling 125cc motorcycle in India. While these figures are mighty impressive in itself, the sales are likely to rise even more in May keeping in mind that the Activa 125 launch on April 28.

Bajaj Discover 125M

Following a decline in overall sales in the first couple of months of the year, Bajaj Auto had finally managed to show some positive signs last month, albeit with just one per cent rise in sales. But the month of April has once again not proven to be quite satisfying as the registered 2,99,636 units sold as opposed to the 3,00,827 in April 2013. Having said that, the Chakan-based manufacturer saw a hike in the exports with 1,50,714 units which is an increase of over 20,000 units. While all other manufacturers have recognised and tapped the rapidly growing scooter segment, the complete absence of Bajaj is evidently taking a toll on its overall sales charts.

Yamaha Motor India Sales Pvt. Ltd had yet another eventful month in terms of sales with an overall growth of 42 per cent. The company sold 51,158 units in April 2014 as opposed to 35,927 units sold in April last year. April has been a very good outing for the Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer going by the fact that they managed to double the percentage growth from last month this can be credited to their recently launched scooter Alpha which has been recording impressive sales ever since its launch.

Mahindra Two Wheelers Ltd. (MTWL) sold 15,845 units during April 2014 as against 5,367 units in the same month last year. The Company sold 14,896units domestically while the rest were exports. We expect to further accelerate our growth with the new campaign, backed by a strong service commitment and network. The Centuro is the best choice for consumers in its segment.”

TVS Star City Plus

With 1,83,179 two-wheelers sold in the April 2014 as opposed to 160,502 units in the same month last year, TVS Motor Company recorded a 14 per cent growth in sales. At 37 per cent, the company also recorded a massive increase in two-wheeler exports. In the cut throat scooter segment that is dominated by the Honda Activa, the Jupiter seems to be making a place for itself and the 55 per cent increase in its scooter sales is testimony of the same. The Hosur-based two-wheeler manufacturer sold 46,069 scooters in the month of April 2014 as opposed to 29,692 units in April last year. TVS had also showcased the Scooty Zest at the 2014 Auto Expo which is scheduled to be launched soon and will further help in boosting the overall sales for the brand. Meanwhile, with the launch of the new TVS Star City+ in the commuter segment, the company expects a further rise in the overall sales.
