According to reports KTM is in talks to acquire Spanish motorcycle brand Gas Gas. The going has been tough for Gas Gas in the recent past and has been facing lot of financial issues. In fact, production for Gas Gas motorcycles has been stopped in Spain which has rendered close to 500 workers almost jobless. According to Gas Gas CEO, Yariv Gilat he has been in touch with investors to pump some money into the ailing brand and the KTM could be one of those.
According to Gilat, the Gas Gas brand needs an investment of 24 million Euros to keep it functional. Currently it’s been kept going by funds from the Spanish government but it wouldn’t sustain for too long. If KTM manages to acquire the Gas Gas brand then it will be the third European off-road motorcycle brand to be brought by the Austrian bikemaker. KTM owns being Husaberg and Husqvarna which at one of time was its competitors in the off-road motorcycle market.
KTM has been very smart with its acquisitions also as unlike what was predicted it didn’t kill the Husqvarna brand as it was a rival to its motorcycle range. KTM CEO Stefan Pierer has kept alive the Husqvarna and invested the much needed funds that resulted in the Husky clocking sales 50 per cent than what it achieved in 2012 under BMW Motorrad. Gas Gas would be hoping that even it gets the same treatment as Husqvarna received and also the massive KTM dealer network in Europe should result in good sales for the Spanish brand. Whether this happens or not only time will answer. Watch this space for more updates.
