Has recorded a staggering 108 percent growth in May 2012 over the same period last year

Toyota Etios Liva

The big jump in sales for Toyota in May 2012 over the same period last year is largely a result of new vehicles from Toyota on the market. Four vehicle launches, namely, the Etios Liva, Corolla Altis, facelifts of the Innova and Fortuner have contributed to the 108 per cent growth figure.

The Etios Liva hatchback sold 2,587 units and 523 units of the Corolla Altis premium sedan were sold in May 2012. The face-lifted Innova sold 6,750 units compared to 2,961 units sold in May 2011 and the face-lifted Fortuner racked up a figure of 1,399 units compared to 672 units in May 2011. The entry-level Etios sedan sold 4,270 units compared to 3,412 units in May 2011.

In total, the Japanese car maker sold 15,501 vehicles in May 2012 compared to 7,470 vehicles sold in May 2011, thereby registering a growth of 108 per cent on a year-over-year basis.

“Production was affected by tsunami last year, thus affecting sales in May 2011, with 7,470 units being sold. Last month, Etios, Etios Liva, New Innova and New Fortuner continued to show good results because of high customer confidence.

The sales have been good, despite the low market sentiments. However, with the rupee weakening, we are unable to retain the current prices. We are forced to pass a part of it to our customers. There will be a one per cent increase in the prices of Etios diesel and Innova and a 0.5 per cent increase in Fortuner and Etios Liva Diesel, with effect from 1st June,” said Sandeep Singh, Deputy Managing Director - Marketing.
