Toyota Motor Corp recalls 6.5 vehicles globally to fix a faulty power window switch

Toyota Camry Hybrid

In a recent announcement, Toyota Motor Corp recalled 6.5 million cars globally to fix a faulty power window switch. The Japanese car maker says that the modules in the power window switch may not have been aptly lubricated while manufacturing. Collection of dust, or debris caused by wear from electrical contract points can accumulate and cause a short circuit. This could potentially lead to overheating of the assembly and possibly a fire. Toyota has recalled Camry and Camry Hybrid models produced between 2007 and 2009; Corollas produced from 2009-2011, Yaris and RAV4 among others.

This isn’t the first time the car maker has announced a recall due to a faulty power window switch. In 2012 more than 7.4 million cars were recalled due to a similar problem. In fact, even earlier this year the company had to recall close to 3 million vehicles in the US to fix an issue with the Takata airbags.

The frequency of recalls in the automotive industry have been gradually increasing of late and that is mainly due to the fact that manufacturers prefer to step up their game in order to avoid major scandals.
