After grabbing public attention with the new 2008 DKR, Team Peugeot-Total has finally revealed the inner workings of this muscular beast

Peugeot 2008 DKR

Remember the beast – the 2008 DKR that Peugeot had uncaged a few months ago. Back then, Peugeot was tight-lipped on the specs of this Daker racer. But, the French carmaker has now made up its mind to let the world know how it plans to compete in the world’s toughest rally - the 2015 Dakar Rally, with this matte black monster.

The 2015 Peugeot 2008 DKR features a mid-mounted V6 twin-turbocharged diesel engine which churns out 340PS of power. Peugeot has not revealed details on whether the 2008 DKR is a rear-wheel-drive or front-wheel-drive car.

According to Bruno Famin, Director, Peugeot Sports, the biggest question that pops up in cross-country rallying is whether to run a car with four-wheel-drive or just a two-wheel-drive. He explains that the company studied all these aspects in detail and decided to go for a two-wheel-drive transmission which has several benefits of its own.

With a two-wheel-drive car, Peugeot could actually try to be the first team to win the 2015 Dakar Rally with a diesel-powered 2WD machine. According to regulations, two-wheel-drive cars are allowed to be significantly lighter than 4x4s. These cars are also allowed to use bigger wheels, which provides them an advantage on difficult terrains. Additionally, larger wheels have also allowed Peugeot to minimise the car’s front overhang.

According to Jean-Christophe Pallier, Technical Project Manager, Peugeot, the 2008 DKR has longer suspension levels- 460mm, which enhances its ability over dunes and helps its to run efficiently over uneven ground.

The Peugeot 2008 DKR will make its competition debut in January 2015 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. It will face stiff competition from a heavily-modified Mini Countryman that has stood first in every edition of the grueling race since 2012.
