Sales are finally getting back on track and it promises to get better with the festive season coming soon. There are plenty of car launches over the next two months to further boost the industry and the reduced excise duties are set to stay at least till the end of this calendar year. The top five carmakers are settling into their stride as this list stays unchanged from last month. But expect it to change around August when cars like the Honda Mobilio, Tata Bolt and Zest join the market.
Top 5 –
1. Maruti Suzuki
Maruti’s domestic sales are up 31.1 percent in June 2014 compared to 2013 but that is mainly due to the poor period last year due to labour troubles and the ensuing plant shutdown. That said, the company clocked 1.09 lakh units last month posting a growth of 10.3 percent in the first quarter of FY 2014-15. Maruti seems to have struck silver if not gold with the Celerio as sales of the company’s compact hatchbacks has risen 21.2 percent.
2. Hyundai
Hyundai holds firm to its second spot in the rankings in June with total domestic sales of 33,514 units, a growth of 9.5 percent over the same period last year. While the Verna is facing stiff competition from the City and has lost a bit of ground in the C-segment, the launch of the Xcent has compensated for the Verna’s slight dip in sales. There’s no new product from Hyundai for a few months so responsibility for good sales over the festive season lies on the Xcent’s shoulders.
3. Mahindra
Mahindra is holding on to the third spot in the rankings by just a whisker. The Indian carmaker’s dependence on UVs and diesel engines only is backfiring over the long run as it doesn’t cater to a large section of the Indian car market. In June 2014, the company’s UVs and the Verito and Verito Vibe sold 16,780 units cumulatively, a de-growth of 3 percent from the same period last year and a 10 percent drop in sales in the first quarter of FY 2014-15.
4. Honda
Honda cars India continues to be the star performer this year and all credit goes to the City that has taken the Japanese carmaker to new heights. Honda June sales stood at 16,316 units, a growth of 75 percent over last year. The City is the Carmaker’s largest seller clocking 7,723 units in June and the Amaze is close on its heels with 7,075 units last month. And the mood must be upbeat in the Honda camp with the Mobilio coming this month. There is a good chance of Honda becoming the third largest car manufacturer in India in two months time.
5. Toyota
Another Japanese giant in the top five is Toyota. Domestic sales grew 9 percent for the Bangalore based carmaker as it registered 12,010 units in June 2014 compared to 11,010 in the same period last year. This month shows positive signs for Toyota as demand for the Etios Cross and Corolla Altis is high, the former getting 5,400 bookings since its launch and the latter scoring over 3,000 bookings in a segment that doesn’t fare too well. This certainly makes it the star car of the month.
