The sedan segment, especially in the upper midsize arena, is scurrying for cover since the Honda City has been launched. There’s just not enough space for another new comer to enter and one good performer is affecting the others. But that’s good news for you if you’re hatching a plan to sign that dotted line around the Rs 10 lakh mark. Because if you can look past the City, there’s a lot of money waiting to be saved. 1. Volkswagen Vento

Volkswagen is facing a tough time in India. It’s definitely not an easy market to enter as the folks at VW had envisioned and so the company has lowered its expectations from India which were at 20 percent to an achievable 8 percent. The Vento is a major contributor to VW’s success and so to make it do well, the German carmaker has upped discounts to as high as Rs 75,000. There are no offers on the entry level Trendline variant though.

2. Skoda Rapid

The Vento’s badge engineered cousin is facing the heat too. The Rapid is going at discounts around Rs 70,000 flat that includes a massive Rs 45,000 cash discount. A replacement for the Rapid is some time away and a DSG equipped diesel is coming only towards the end of this year so expect this offer to carry on for a while now.

3. Maruti SX4

The SX4 is running its last mile. A replacement is due in a few months and so expect such discounts to run till all the remaining cars run out of stock. A Rs 40,000 cash discount, a Rs 25,000 exchange bonus and a Rs 5,000 corporate discount sum up the bundle offer. This will stay at most before a month of the festive season.

4. Hyundai Verna

Once the C-segment best seller, the Verna is a distant second to the Honda City. It is still head and shoulders ahead of the rest of the segment but Hyundai wants to keep the momentum going. And so the Verna is being offered with an Rs 50,000 deal on the petrol and Rs 55,000 bundled deal on the diesel that includes a cash discount, exchange bonus and a corporate discount.

5. Nissan Sunny

Nissan has just given the Sunny a facelift. We’ve driven the refreshed Sunny and are of the opinion that it looks much more attractive than the outgoing model. It hasn’t been launched just yet and so discounts on the out-going model are on for a short while to clear stocks. Since the Japanese carmaker sells the Sunny in small numbers due to its poor demand, you won’t have much time till the stocks run out.

6. Tata Indigo eCS

Tata’s compact sedan is very affordable. It’s also very last generation and mostly bought by the taxi market. But just in case you are looking for a bargain sedan at a throwaway price, there’s no cheaper option and at present, discounts ranging from Rs 25,000-Rs 35,000 are on the Indigo eCS. Soon the Tata Zest will be launched and then discounts on the Indigo eCS should go up a notch.

7. Renault Scala

We expect the Scala and Sunny to switch places next month when the refreshed Sunny is launched. The Scala anyway is costlier than its badge-engineered cousin and with the update, poses a bigger threat. So hold on to your money for a month. Deals worth Rs 25,000-35,000 are likely to go up. Expect more than just free insurance for your first year.

8. Chevrolet Sail

Deals and discounts on the Chevrolet Sail have considerably reduced since a few months ago when it was around Rs 45,000. A small cash discount of Rs 5,000 and a corporate discount of Rs 5,000 isn’t worth your purchase, especially when there are better sedans to opt for.
