BMW has announced it will integrate GoPro camera controls into the infotainment systems of newer BMW and Mini models. The German carmaker claims this will be the first factory integration of the compact video camera in a mass-produced car.
This integration will allow drivers to control their GoPro cameras through the car’s dash. To get the GoPro capability, one must have a 2012 or newer BMW model with the BMW Apps feature or Mini Connect, incase of a Mini. One also needs an iPhone 4 or newer and a wifi-enabled GoPro camera.
BMW and Mini drivers will be able to control their GoPro cameras via the 8.8-inch high-resolution display that comes as an option on all new Mini vehicles and ConnectedDrive software found on BMW’s iDrive centre console.
Through the iDrive controller and the vehicle’s central screen, drivers can aim the camera, choose between six pre-set camera modes (leisure drive facing out, night driving, sport drive facing out, drive camera facing in, winding road time lapse, and straight road time lapse), and record and pause.
The app also displays elapsed recording time, Wi-Fi signal strength, and battery life, and allows drivers to put the camera to sleep between shots.
The BMW-compatible app can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store.
