Ah the monsoons… fantastic weather for long drives and one of the best times to go car shopping too. This month, the discounts have gone up on hatchbacks to levels hard to resist. Maruti has triggered heavy discounting on cars like the Alto 800, Wagon R and the Ritz. Solid European hatchbacks like the Polo (the outgoing one) and the Punto are running the best offers this month and there’s a lot more on offer too from Chevrolet, Ford and Hyundai. Take a look.

1. Fiat Punto

Fiat’s Punto is a slow selling hatchback, everyone knows that. But it isn’t a dud. In fact the Punto is an attractive hatchback with proven engines and excellent driving dynamics. It is affordable too, and now with the discounts the dealerships are running, very hard to ignore. We found deals and discounts worth Rs 72,000-80,000 depending on variant. It’s still not as much as last month but a handsome offer nonetheless.

2. Volkswagen Polo

Now if you are looking for the Polo that was recently launched, you will be disappointed because no offer is running on this car. But VW has plenty of stock to clear of the outgoing car that’s not going to find many takers any more. 3. Maruti Ritz

The Ritz is the ignored child in the Maruti stable, purely selling in auto pilot mode. It’s a generation older than the current Swift, with no replacement plan in the near future. And Maruti has realized now that it is getting tough to sell this aging hatchback so you can get deals and discounts worth Rs 68,000 on the Ritz. If you aren’t looking for something too contemporary, the Ritz can be a good choice. It’s got proven engines and gearboxes, plenty of interior space, fuel efficiency and a city friendly nature.

4. Maruti Wagon R

If there’s one car that shouts out value for money in the month of July, it’s the Wagon R. This boxy tall boy is going for offers worth Rs 62,000. Even the Wagon R Stingray is being offered with similar discounts and this most likely is due to cannibalization from the Celerio. It’s tough to be sell three cars at more or less the same price and not get hit one way or the other. The Wagon R is facing the heat now. But with these discounts, the hatchback is worth considering.

5. Maruti Alto 800

The Alto may be the best-selling car in India but it requires some selling by the sales force at Maruti dealerships to get it there. That’s a lot of sales talk… The Alto is steadily looking like a has-been with fresher competition around like the Eon and the Datsun Go. And so you can get discounts to the tune of 20 percent of the price of the car. This includes an Rs 20,000 exchange bonus but not many may avail of that as the Alto 800 mostly is a first time buyer’s car.

6. Chevrolet Beat

Chevrolet has upped discounts on the Beat to a bundle pack of Rs 53,000 from the Rs 48,000 offered last month. The increase has come towards the exchange bonus, again something that will not be availed by many in this segment. If you do, the Beat is good value and looks funkier than before with its facelift. The recent Manchester United editions aren’t offered with any discounts though.

7. Ford Figo

We can’t reiterate more on why the Figo is an excellent affordable small car because you already know that. With these discounts, you are getting more than your money’s worth, albeit a car that’s about half a decade old now. There are no solidly built hatchbacks at this price in the market so if good quality build is one of your top priorities, the Figo will emerge near the top of your list.

8. Chevrolet Sail U-VA

There’s a reason why the Sail doesn’t sell very well in India. It feels built to a cost, is uninvolving to drive and has a Chinese tag stuck to it. But the Sail U-VA is good value and attractive for those who don’t care too much about the above mentioned drawbacks. Since it is built to a price, margins aren’t great so offers too can’t be pushed too high. You still get about Rs 43,000 knocked off with a discount bundle, a large chunk of which is an increased cash discount from last month.

9. Hyundai i20

A new Hyundai i20 is over a month or two away and one could argue why Hyundai needs a new one. The current i20 is selling pretty well. But these are plans for the future. At present, the i20 despite being a premium hatchback stepping on toes of cars a segment higher is going with discounts worth Rs 38,000 which is lower than deals offered in June. We anyway suggest you wait for the new i20 which should positively be here before Diwali.

10. Hyundai Eon

While Maruti is offering excellent discounts on the Alto, Hyundai is holding back a bit on the Eon. That’s because the Eon now has a 1.0-litre engine that has given the baby Hyundai another boost on the sales charts. Deals and discounts worth Rs 31,000-34,000 which include free insurance for the first year are part of the package.
