The New Swift: Is the Price Right?

by Sukhpreet Singh Posted on 19 Aug 2011114,411 Views50 Comments

The Swift stood for a value for money product in the premium hatchback segment. In fact it is the consumer who always pitted the Swift against the competition. Basically the Swift was the yardstick for the segment. Now with the new Swift in town, we have decided to do the same and see if the new Swift has the potential to take over the mantle.

Talk about the Swift and all you would find is a massive number owning or aspiring to own them. Its not only the good looks of the car, it has a lot to do with when "You're the Fuel". Not only has the Swift been a fun car to drive, but, its responsive engine and cheap spares were good enough factors to take the country by a storm which it did. The first version of the Swift back in 2005 took the country by a storm. Not just was it an instant hit, it became the ultimate hot hatchback with a decent feel at a really affordable price tag. With the first generation petrol motor being a naturally aspirated 1.3 liter mill, the kick was good enough. However, with next-gen technologies and manufacturers working on the more powerful while being more fuel efficient engines, the birth of the KB12 series engine took place. With a decent figure of 17.5 kilometers to a liter and 85 PS of power, the new kid on the block sure packed a punch. At Rs.4.09 lakhs, ex-showroom delhi, the LXi version was available with a 1.3 liter motor.

However, despite having the premiumness a hatchback should have, it lacked some significant features which came up in the other models of different makes as the competition grew. With more manufacturers wanting to have the biggest slice in the hatchback segment for themselves, Maruti Suzuki had to do something more. Enter the new Swift. The LXi trim available for Rs.4.22 lakhs, offers the same design style as the old one, however, small details have been taken care of and it surely is way ahead of what the old one ever could be. Also, this time around, the KB12 gets a Variable Valve Timing making it more efficient. We don't have the tested figures yet, however, the ARAI claimed figure is 18.6 kilometers to a liter. Not only that, the new Swift is also lighter, longer and lighter by 20 kilos making it faster off the block. As for the interiors, the plastic quality is way better. But, then again, why are we telling you this? What matters more is the tilt steering and height adjustable driver and passenger seats and the tachometer which runs standard across all models.

It's a great feeling to own a Swift, Since last 1 year, I am driving the Swift diesel version with great fuel economy -- the best hatchback in today's Indian market.

Really...one has to retrospect themselves that why SWIFT is most liked Hatch Back by Indian Folks. It is nothing but 'PERFORMANCE'..! Whatever, i20 or Jazz or Micra or even VW Polo are finding it difficult to attract the SWIFT buyers..!! Still the Price of Jazz is not attractive against Petrol SWIFT.

For all the people going to wait for a year to get delivery of your booked Swift. Please take a look at New Honda Jazz. The base version of Jazz has more features than fully loaded Swift roughly at the same price. Rs 5.5 lakhs for New Honda Jazz makes it hell lot attractive. Beware Swifts, i20, Grande Punto 90 HP, Polo etc etc

I intend to go in for a Swift Diesel VDI. The problem is that I live overseas and sparingly use the car when I'm back say once or twice in 2 months. Is this good for the health of a Diesel car or should I look at buying a Petrol version? Anyone....

It is true that Honda jazz basic is offering much more features than the fully loaded swift at a lower price. The jazz is also a bigger and better vehicle which offers more comfort. Those looking for fully loaded version of swift will definitely have a look at jazz which is better VFM package after the price reduction. Honda has now priced their vehicle very competitively and next month sales figures of jazz will create news in auto industry.

Why is every article on swift 2011 only on positives, does this mean there are issues with this vehicle, articles even on high end vehicles cribb about shortcomings correct? I don't want to sound like i don't like this vehicle, media should not be biased towards anything, they need to present a true picture, i read at other websites that swift always had very small boot and this time its even lesser ?, what about split seats at rear? what are the wait times? what about ground clearance? what about the protruding mirrors in swift and with now electrically adjustable, any breakage is gonna cost more correct ?

At last I have the priviledge to own a Vdi version (the Zdi being too expensive for my pocket) MSIL have got a hit with the new swift. The performance of the swift was never in question, with more fine tuning and upgradations MSIL has offered an excellent hatch. The ride & the drive is very comfortable. A very good vehicle both technically and aesthetically. It was worth the waiting.

I had a thorough look and test drive of the new swift,I believe there was too much of hype about this car,but it doesnt match.the worst aspect is its boot has been reduced from the outgoing model to 210 litres and although its longer than old swift it doesnt turn into increased comfort.its all the same.it cannot be compared with i 20 for sure. i felt the older swift was better than new one!

Just another 4-6 months and dealers will run after customers...all companies will be forced to sell at much lower prices....customer would be the king............let the manufacturers fight amoung themselves...anyway they only put second grade spares/parts in India to make superlative profits..........
