First introduced with a plug-in petrol-electric hybrid at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2011, the new Cross Coupe will now have a more frugal plug-in hybrid engine

Set to debut at the 2012 Geneva International Motor Show, Volkswagen's 157 mpg (67 kmpl) SUV is a perfect example to show a crossover between a four-door coupe and a compact SUV. With its bold and beautiful treatment of horizontal lines, headlamps and grille, the coupe is surely a head-turner.

Under the hood is an alliance of a turbodiesel direct injection engine (TDI) and two electric motors. Its combined fuel consumption in the New European Driving Cycle is a sensationally low 1.8 litres per 100 km.  This translates into CO2 emissions of just 46 g/km in a powerful SUV with a top speed of 220 km/h (137 mph), 225 kW/306PS of power and a kerb weight of 1,858kg.

This new Cross Coupe is based on Volkswagen's new modular transverse matrix (MQB) platform and clearly showcases the future range of SUVs and technology to come up in all VW's future cars.

Stay tuned to this space for more information about this new Cross Coupe post its unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show on Tuesday, March 6, 2012.

In November 2011, when the Cross Coupe Concept was unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show, the SUV got two electric motors (one at the front and one at the back) which generate 40kW/180Nm of torque and 85kW/270 Nm respectively. For more on this version of the coupe, read here!
