The Gulf Monsoon Scooter Rally 2011

Avtar Singh surfaced as a clear winner at the Monsoon Scooter Rally which was organised by Sports craft sponsored for the 11th consecutive time by Gulf Oil. Riding through the dirt tracks, Avtar showed tremendous skill on his Hinda Activa which upset the plans of former winners Manjeet Singh Bassan, Rustom Patel and Shamim Khan taking victory in the demanding 75km rally on his Honda Activa. Bassan finished second in 50.20 seconds on his LML Vespa that has won him many titles at the Monsoon Scooter Rally.

The Rally was flagged off from Our Lady’s Home (St. Paul School) in Parel at 8:30 am. Curiously, the rally took off witht the wave of a black flag (ntomally used to penalize riders for breach of rules) as a gesture to censure terrorism after the participants observed two minutes’ silence to respect the victims of the recent 13/7 bomb blasts in Mumbai.  

The riders travelled to a much more competitive section on the transport sector to Belapur to battle it out on the backwoods, where riders had to be highly cautious in order to not take a tumble on the gravel-laden slushy road. The rains during the rally and a week prior to it made the terrain even more challenging but rode with courage. Some participants even fell and damaged  their scooters riding through sections logged with knee deep water that were clubbed with steep inclines and hairpin bends.

“This was a real monsoon scooter rally. Perhaps, the best challenge we have got in all these years,” said Bassan at the end of the rally.
