KOLKATA: It seems like the jinx for Tata's 1 lakh rupee car project continues- this time on account of the on-going violence in Kolkata and some logistical snags. But the delay this time around has tested the Tata's patience and they have decided to move out of Singur to Uttaranchal's Pantnagar plant.

So if you are looking to buying the Tata's 1 lakh rupee car, you will have to wait a little longer as the car is expected to hit the road only by July 2008.The delay occurred due to protests by locals, logistics snags and even due to flooding.Although construction activity at the site has been ramped up with nearly 3,000 people working round the clock, the project has fallen far behind the clock. And so it seems like the first lot will probably come from its other plant in Pantnagar.Workers at the Singur plant said they had been informed by the management there that manufacturing would start by November 2008.

Accordingly work is in full swing at the Singur car factory, but for whatever reasons - be it the initial land acquisition protests or monsoon delays or logistic snags - if the project does not achieve its deadline and the first batch of the much-anticipated Rs 1 lakh car gets rolled out its Uttaranchal plant, then it will certainly mean a moral defeat for the tireless efforts of the state's Chief Minister whose efforts actually retained the Tatas prized project to this state. While the Tatas have refused to confirm the developments, when contacted, a Tata Motors spokesperson said "We have increased the pace of construction work at Singur to reduce the delay. We expect to commence production in the middle of our next financial year."

While the Tata's struggle to get the Singur plant up and running, in all probability they could be using their Pantnagar facility to roll out the much-awaited 1 lakh rupee car.So the Tatas are keeping their fingers crossed hoping that there will be not be any further delays. There's reason for them to worry though, as Maruti and even Bajaj are gearing up to launch models in the small car segment.
