A few days after releasing the first images of the Tiago, Tata Motors unveils its upcoming entry-level hatchback today

There has been a lot of hype surrounding Tata’s upcoming entry-level hatchback. Codenamed Kite, late last month, Tata announced the name of its newest offering in the India Automotive space as the Tiago. Less than a week after, the Sanand-based car maker released the first official images of the Tiago to the press and public. And today, Tata will finally give us a closer look of the Tiago in Goa.

As far as design is concerned, the Tiago gets the typically Tata smiley grille up front underlined by a fine strip of chrome. On either side of it are those huge arrowhead shaped headlights. It sports a large front bumper that houses the circular fog lamps. In profile, the Tiago gets a sharp shoulder line and a smooth character line to go with it. The boot is unlike any other we have seen in this segment so far. The roof spoiler with the blackened out edges looks neat, as does the tail gate with its sharp creases. As far as dimensions go, the Tata Tiago is 3,746mm long, 1,647mm wide and 1,535mm tall.

In terms of features the Tiago will get 3-point seat belts for the front and rear passengers as well as a lap belt for the centre passenger at the back. Other features include steering mounted controls, Bluetooth connectivity, central locking, speed sensing auto lock, turn indicators on ORVMs and Day and Night Inside Rear view Mirror. Safety features include 2 airbags up front, Antilock Braking System (ABS) as well as Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD). The Tiago also gets some first-in-class features like turn-by-turn navigation on the screen when the phone is connected via Bluetooth. The App also utilises the mobile hotspot of the phone in order to create a virtual network allowing multiple users to play their playlists at the same time.

The Tiago will get a 1.2-litre 3-cylinder petrol unit that makes 85PS of peak power at 6,000rpm and 114Nm of max torque at 3,500rpm. The Tiago will also come with a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder turbocharged diesel unit that will pump power of 70PS at 4,000rpm and maximum torque of 140Nm at 1,800-3,00rpm. This engine is essentially the same one we have seen on the Indigo CS less one cylinder. Both these engines will come mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Braking duties are performed by disc brakes up front and a drum setup at the back.  Both the variants of the Tiago get 170mm of ground clearance and a 35 litre fuel tank.

Tata Motors will launch the Tiago in India in march 2016 and is expected to price it starting Rs 4 lakh. When it is launched, the Tata Tiago will go against the likes of the Maruti Suzuki Celerio, the Hyundai i10 and the Chevrolet Beat. The Tata Tiago will be unveiled to the press later in the day today. Stay tuned to ZigWheels.com for more details.
