The latest car from Tata Motors, the Tiago, seems to have struck a positive chord with small car buyers, and this is reflecting in its latest booking numbers. The cheeky little hatchback has garnered more than 15,000 bookings since its launch. This certainly must have come as a relief for the home-grown manufacturer as its vehicles hadn’t been getting the desired response in the past. The positive reaction might also be an indication that the new generation of Tata vehicles could finally carve a niche for themselves in the passenger car segment. The Tiago is just the beginning, though, as later on this year Tata will be launching a slew of its next-generation cars, which includes the Hexa, the Kite 5, and the Nexon.

The reason for the Tiago’s success can be attributed to the plethora of features it offers at a reasonable price. The base variant starts at Rs 3.20 lakh and goes all the way up to Rs 5.54 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The competition, which includes cars like the Celerio, the i10, and the Beat, are all priced above the Tiago’s price bracket.

That said, there are reports that Tata is planning to hike the introductory price of the Tiago soon, albeit still keeping it fairly competitive with respect to the competition.

The Tiago is powered by both petrol and diesel motors. The petrol is the familiar 1.2-litre 85PS mill that produces a peak torque figure of 114Nm. The diesel is an all-new 1.05-litre Revotorq motor producing 70PS of power and 140Nm of torque. Both the engines are offered with a standard 5-speed manual transmission, but an AMT version could be introduced soon.

Apart from the 15,000 bookings, the Tiago also witnessed 1,00,000 inquiries from interested customers. Now, what’s important to see here is how Tata handles the aftersales part of Tiago, as the manufacturer has always struggled on its service front.
