Japanese tyremaker, Yokohama is set to commence production at its first tyre manufacturing plant in Jhajjar, Haryana. The new plant is a small scale manufacturing unit where Yokohama will manufacture two of its passenger car tyres for the Indian market. The company has invested Rs 300 crore to set up this plant and will have a manufacturing capacity of 7 lakh units per annum to begin with.
The first two products coming from the Indian facility will be the Earth 1 and S Drive branded tyres in 25 different sizes (diameter, profile and cross-section). Earth 1 is more comfort oriented and is available in 14 and 15 inch sizes. S Drive the sportier of the two and it comes in 16 inch as well. Yokohama will tweak the tyre compound of the S Drive to suit our road conditions. While Earth 1 will be manufactured from the beginning of November, the locally manufactured S Drive tyre is some time away.
Yokohama tyres are known for their performance and are a popular choice among enthusiasts in India. Especially the Geolander SUV range of off-road tyres find themselves into many a competitive car in the rallies up north. With the new facility coming up, there is a likelihood of other brands in the Yokohama range being manufactured here if there’s a market for them.
