Tata Motors has joined the small capacity turbocharged petrol engine bandwagon and has launched the new 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine under the Revotron family of engines. This new engine family will offer a variety of engines in the coming months from a sub 1-litre engine to a speculative bigger sub 2.0-litre engine. The latter might also be used for export applications.
The 1.2-litre engine that produces 85PS of power and 140Nm of peak torque will be the first production ready engine that will be offered by Tata Motors. The first family of cars that will receive this engine will be the soon to be launched Tata Manza CS and the Tata Vista facelift.
Ranjit Yadav, President, Tata Motors indicated strongly that these engines will be launched in Tata’s all-new products very soon and will see a commercial roll-out from the company’s Pune facility later this year. He also mentioned how Tata Motors currently have a 9 per cent overall market share in the diesel car segment and this was the first step towards achieving the same in the petrol class. This is also the reason why Tata Motors has invested heavily in these new engines.
Dr Tim Leverton, President and Head, Engineering Research Centre, mentioned how there were about five engines in totality that the Revotron family will cover, from small capacity engines to larger capacity engines for various different purposes. He also mentioned that these engines will power Tata’s current and future range of compact hatchbacks, compact saloons and midsize sedans in the next few years.
We at ZigWheels believe Tata’s next unveil in the Revotron family will be two sub 1-litre engines which will work towards replacing the Tata Nano’s current naturally aspirated power train. There have been strong indications of a more powerful turbocharged Tata Nano on the cards for little over a year now and we would not be surprised if Tata Motors followed the launch of the Nano Twist with a more powerful version in the months to follow. This would be particularly plausible considering how the Tata Nano diesel project is said to have been scrapped due to problems in noise and vibration issues in the drivetrain.
