Helpless Indian car buyers saddled with vehicles having engineering glitches may be less of a phenomenon in the years ahead.

Automobile industry body, Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers' (SIAM), has announced a voluntary 'Recall Policy' where all companies will follow standard procedures on detection of manufacturing defects in their products.

The new policy specifies that all makers of motor vehicles-from two-wheeler makers to commercial vehicles and even vehicles imported by car companies-need to voluntarily rectify, free of cost, any technical problem that compromises safety.

Vehicles within seven years of manufacture will be covered under the safety recall. Companies will be required to post notifications on their websites and publicise through other media.

SIAM President S Sandilya told reporters in Delhi on Monday: "The policy is a consensus of all the members and is another initiative towards our commitment to automotive quality and responsibility. All companies based in India will adhere to it voluntarily to rectify defects and secure their own brand image."

He, however, added that the policy has also recommended government intervention in case of proven violations.
