Ford puts its latest 'Vehicle 2 Vehicle' technology on display at the 2014 Computex in Taipei

Ford showcases Vehicle 2 Vehicle communication

Ford has given live demonstrations of its experimental vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications technology for the first time in Asia Pacific in Taipei. The company used two Ford Kuga SUVs for this live demonstration to show how the two cars exchanged data including speed, location, predicted path and potential hazards.

The system uses a Wi-Fi based radio transmission, which Ford says will improve a car’s ability to recognise hazards before it can 'see' them. Current radar-based technologies can detect cars that are already in a car’s blind spot, but V2V technology enables cars to detect fast-moving vehicles before they enter into the blind spot. Drivers may be alerted to vehicles approaching at a high-speed in advance, allowing them to make more informed and safe decisions.

With V2V communication, drivers may receive alerts of vehicles that would otherwise be obscured by objects or circumstances, such as at an intersection, while following behind an oversized vehicle or going around a sharp turn.

The V2V system forms part of Ford’s Blueprint for Mobility, with Vehicle 2 Infrastructure (V2I) technology also under development.

Technology from the 2015 Mustang is also on display which includes 'track apps' with real-time statistics, MyKey, launch control and tyre-pressure monitoring.
