Spanish oil giant Repsol have announced that it has extended its sponsorship deal with the factory Honda MotoGP outfit by three more years. As part of the new agreement Repsol will be the title sponsor until the 2017 season. Repsol has been associated with Honda from the 1995 season, making them the longest running sponsor-factory sponsorship deal in the history of premiere class motorcycle racing.
The extension of contract doesn’t come as a surprise as Honda has been performing exceeding well in the past two season and has won each and every race of the 10 races in the 2014 season so far. Another major factor is the fact that both the bikes are being piloted by Spanish riders, Marc Marquez and Dani Pedrosa (who recently extended his contract with Honda by two years). Repsol and Honda have an illustrious pas as among their 20 year association they have won 133 premiere class wins and 10 rider titles.
The Repsol Honda team has also been team champions on 6 occasions, since the award was created in 2002. Half of the World Championship titles won in the past 20 years have gone to Repsol Honda thanks to Mick Doohan (between 1995 and 1998), Alex Criville (1999), Valentino Rossi (2002 and 2003), Nicky Hayden (2006), Casey Stoner (2011) and Marc Marquez (2013).
