Royal Enfield Himalayan

Royal Enfield has postponed the launch of its Himalayan adventure bike to coincide with the Auto Expo to be held in February 2016.

A source close to the company has disclosed to ZigWheels.com that the Royal Enfield Himalayan is now likely to be launched at or around the time of the 2016 Auto Expo. Earlier, another source had told ZigWheels.com that the Royal Enfield Himalayan will be launched in November.

It was also speculated that the Himalayan may be unveiled at the Royal Enfield Rider Mania in Goa later this month, but even that doesn’t seem to be happening anymore.

The RE Himalayan will be powered by a new four stroke, single cylinder, 410cc air-cooled engine, which will make around 28PS of power and 32Nm of torque. The engine will also have overhead cams instead of the traditional push rod architecture on Royal Enfield engines and is expected to freely rev to 6500-7000rpm. The engine will also be equipped with a counter balancer to reduce vibrations, so expect the Himalayan’s mill to be the most refined unit seen on a Royal Enfield yet.

The engine will be mounted on an all-new double cradle frame designed by UK-based motorcycle chassis and components manufacturer Harris Performance. Earlier this year, Royal Enfield acquired Harris Performance, which was responsible for the chassis development of the Royal Enfield Continental GT as well.

RE Himalayan details

So far, Royal Enfield has been tight-lipped about any details about the Himalayan, but several spy shots of the bike undergoing test runs on public roads have already emerged on the Internet. The Himalayan is expected to come in two variants and priced between Rs 1.65 lakh and Rs 1.85 lakh, one source had earlier disclosed to ZigWheels.com.

One variant will be an all-out off-road oriented adventure touring version with high front fender, windshield and dual sport tyres. Finished in matt black paint, the adventure version will feature high ground clearance, long suspension travel and a high capacity fuel tank, hinting clearly at its adventure touring pedigree. There are crash protection bars around the front and a reinforced sub-frame at the rear for better luggage carrying capacity.

The Himalayan is also expected to come with several first-in-class features, including a new instrument panel displaying two trip meters, compass and even altimeter readings.  A range of add-on accessories are also expected, like hard luggage, hand guards, crash protection bars and high windscreen.

The other variant will be a toned down version with regular street tyres and conventional front mudguard. Both variants will come equipped with a monoshock rear suspension, the first on any Royal Enfield motorcycle.
