RE Himalayan spotted testing near Chennai

Royal Enfield’s upcoming 400cc thumper, Himalayan, has been spotted testing yet again around Chennai, the company’s headquarters.

From the spy shots, shared by a gaadiwaadi.com reader, it’s evident that the new bike will borrow several cosmetic parts from the Continental GT including the headlight, instrument panel and the front fender. The handlebar though gets a ‘raised’ treatment for an upright riding position suitable for long hours on the saddle.

The bike gets adventure motorcycle styling with a raised rear and monoshock suspension, the first on a Royal Enfield. The front forks too get gaiters, hinting at longer suspension travel. The front however, will follow the ‘timeless classic’ design cue of Royal Enfield motorcycles, hinting at classic lines merging with more contemporary ‘adventure touring’ looks, with even an upswept exhaust end-can suitable for riding over rough terrain.

The fuel tank has been covered so it’s difficult to make out the contours and shape, but it’s certainly going to get good capacity, for long distance range. The chassis however, is a single downtube unit, equipped with what looks like a new subframe at the rear, to accommodate a passenger if required, as well as for carrying essential luggage for touring. The single tube chassis is similar to all other Royal Enfield models, except the Continental GT, which comes with a double cradle frame.

The Himalayan is expected to be powered by a 410cc single-cylinder four-stroke engine, and looks like an all-new unit on the spy shots. The engine is expected to make around 30PS of power and an impressive 40Nm of torque, and is likely to be mated to a six-speed transmission. The test mule Himalayan gets both front and rear disc brakes, so these are expected to be carried forward to the production model as well, the rear disc may be offered as an option once the bike is launched.

Royal Enfield has already set sights on becoming a leader in the mid-sized leisure motorcycling segment worldwide and the Himalayan will be the first product from the Chennai-based company, built with the purpose of adventure touring.  Set to be launched later this year or early next year, the Himalayan will be priced around Rs 2.5 lakh and will be available in both domestic and international markets.
