After a brilliant lap by Cesar Campanico that put him and team-mate Aditya Patel on pole for the Race 1 of Round 3 in Jerez, the duo eventually managed to score their first win in the 2014 International GT Open Series. The pole position gave them a great opportunity to ensure that they created a gap between them and the next GT3 car that started in fifth.
As the race started, Campanico lost his lead to Daniel Zampieri in the very first corner but was successful in holding on to second. Despite losing the overall lead, the Mexican continued to be in the lead in the GT3 class. Successfully managing to hold off Andrea Montermini, he remained up ahead of the order before handing over the wheel to Aditya Patel. A pit-lane miscommunication lost the Indian Racer Aditya Patel nearly 15 seconds even before he jumped into the driver’s seat. Patel pushed hard in his Audi R8 but couldn’t regain the lead by passing the Ferrari of Roman Mavlanov and Zampieri. Patel and Campanico had to settle for second place overall but still managed to take the win in the GT3 class by a considerable margin.
"It feels pretty nice to finally win a GT3 race after all the effort we've been putting in since the season began. Again, Cesar did a fantastic job by fighting up in front during his stint. The pit-stop incident was unfortunate. We were very close to winning overall and that would have really been great for us and the team,” Patel said at the end of the race.
Following a fantastic victory in Race1, the second race of the weekend wasn’t as fruitful. This time round, Patel started the race from fourth place in on the grid overall and third in the GT3 class. Throughout the race, he fought hard against the experienced Nicky Pastorelli in the super GT car but despite all efforts simply couldn’t find his way past.
Patel lost a lot of time in the process which allowed the race leaders to pull a decent advantage. In order to avoid losing more time, Patel drove into the pits. Campanico had to wait out a 15-second handicap in the pit-lane. The penalty lost the duo some track positions but thanks to the Mexican’s experience at the Jerez track he could drive hard to bring the car just off the podium in fourth.
“The second race was good. In a way it was better that we finished fourth as a podium position would have given us a twenty second handicap in the next race. Now we can look forward to fighting for another win in Budapest,” Cesar Campanico said.
Three rounds into the season, Team Novadriver currently stands 12th in the Championship table. The next round of the International GT Open series will be held at Hungaroring from July 4 to July 6.
