We bring you a report on all the action witnessed at the Round 2 of the Honda One Make Race held at MMRT in Sriperumudur on the outskirts of Chennai

Riders in action of round 2 of Honda One Make race

For any petrol head a race track is like a holy grail because he has grown up seeing his motorsport icons burning rubber and clashing among selves in a bid to cross the finish line first. Watching racing action on television is fun at the comfort of your home but to witness this action live under sweltering heat with the lively exhaust notes of the machines and all the tussle in front of you is an all together experience.

My desire of witnessing a race live was relished when I was selected to cover the round 2 of the Honda One Make racing competition at Madras Motor Race Track, Sriperumudur. For me, my first track visit turned more exceptional as being a two-wheeler enthusiast, I got an opportunity to view some epic two-wheeler battles as the racers showcased their riding prowess and valor.

Rider in action during the CBF Stunner class race

It was the sixth consecutive year that Honda was participating in the ‘MMSC - FMSCI National Motorcycle Racing Championship’ and has given many budding riders a prospect to showcase their skills on a big platform. Under the new format of the Honda One Make Race, contestants are classified under the categories of novice (beginner class, riders below 23 years) and open (expert class).

This categorization gives the young riders to improve their skills among themselves before progressing to the open class and compete with the more experienced expert class riders. Round 2 of Honda One Make Race saw over 96 riders participating in different categories. Out of these, 64 riders competed for CBF Stunner cup whereas a total of 19 participants qualified in the 150cc ‘CBR 150R’ race and 13 expert riders from 6 teams competed in the Team Championship for CBR 250R race.

S Sarath Kumar and Sumit Loucs Toppo battle for glory

Race 1 of the CBR 250R class was an action packed one as there was a race long battle between S Sarath Kumar Moto3 world championship rider) and Sumit Loucs Toppo for the race lead. The duo swapped positions quite a few time but in the end it was Kumar who made full use of his experience to claim victory over Toppo by just 0.047seconds, to the joy of the crowds.

It was an encore in Race 2 with Kumar and Toppo again battling it out for the lead but Toppo didn’t repeat the mistakes he made in the earlier race to cross the finish line ahead of Kumar to take a well deserved victory.

Toppo carried forward his form in the CBR 150R class where he was able to win two of the three races to add to his kitty of trophies whereas R Ramesh Kumar won the remainder race. The CBF Stunner cup had its fair share of action as there was hardly any gap between the podium finishers. It was Meka Viduraj who dominated the proceedings in the CBF Stunner class as he emerged victorious in both the races.

I would like to make a special mention of Anthony Lalawpia, who had come from Manipur for the first time at MMRT and was able to finish on podium without any prior track experience. All the podium finishers in their respective class were awarded with a a cash prize of Rs. 7500 for 1st position, Rs. 5000 for 2nd place and Rs. 2500 for 3rd place.

“In it’s 6th consecutive year, Honda continues to expand safe fun biking culture in India with the Honda One Make Race. With the CBR 250R under Team Championship, Honda will promote its global legacy of providing advanced motor-sports experience to expert riders.” – said Mr. Keita Muramatsu, President & CEO, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd.
