Uber has started its operations in Delhi after the infamous rape incidence came to light last month. The online taxi-hailing service was banned by the government following allegations that one of its drivers raped a female passenger.
The company had applied for license under Government’s Radio Taxi Scheme. The company previously stated that the licence did not apply to a technology company that connects passengers with drivers.
According to the modified radio taxi scheme, a licencee is required to have a fleet of minimum 200 vehicles and also operate a 24-hour call centre. The license also mandates that each car in the fleet will need a panic button, which a passenger can use in time of crisis.
Uber has also stated that it will work on improving passenger safety by introducing additional safety measures including more stringent driver checks, an in-app emergency button and a dedicated incident response team.
Earlier this month, Delhi government had decided to continue with the ban on Uber and asked it to fulfil the conditions for taxi operations in the national capital before seeking revocation of punitive action.
While Uber is resuming their services, the rape incidence has tainted the image of the company to quiet an extent. There was public outrage in the capital when police authorities revealed that the suspect was on bail for sexual assault, and after Uber acknowledged that it did not carry out background checks on drivers in India.
Uber’s rivals – Olacabs and TaxiForSure, too, have beefed up passenger safety by introducing panic buttons and even special cabs for women passengers.
