Porsche 911 50th anniversary edition

The 911 is one of the longest running nameplates in the automobile industry and to celebrate the 50th birthday of the iconic sports car, Porsche will be showcasing a limited edition 911 50th anniversary celebration model at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show in September where it showcased the original 911 50 years ago.

As it was first presented to the world in the year 1963, only 1,963 pieces of the Porsche 911 50th anniversary edition will ever be made. The anniversary edition is essentially the rear-wheel drive 911 Carrera S featuring a naturally aspirated flat six engine but is visually differentiated with retro design cues as tribute to the original car.

The 911 50th anniversary edition features Porsche’s wide body, typically reserved for the all-wheel drive Carrera 4 models. Other exterior distinguishing styling elements include chrome trim strips on the front air inlets and the fins of the engine compartment grille and the panel between the rear lights emphasise the distinctive appearance of this limited edition model, bi-xenon headlights with dynamic cornering lights, special 20-inch wheel rims are a visual tribute to the legendary “Fuchs” wheels that are finished in matte black paint with polished centres. Other distinguishing exterior features include high-gloss window frames, sport design exterior mirrors and a two-tone 3D-effect badge on the rear lid stating ‘911 50’.

Inside, the Porsche 911 50th anniversary edition gets green coloured numbering in the instruments coupled with white pointer needles and silver caps on the instrument pivot pins, just like 50 years ago. The interiors are all leather while the centre panels of the seats feature a fabric pattern reminiscent of the ‘Pepita’ tartan design from the 60s. The ‘911 50’ tribute badging is repeated in three-colour embroidery on the headrests, as a bicolour logo on the tachometer and the aluminium door sill plates. They can also be found on the cup holder panel, together with the specific limited edition number of the individual vehicle.

The 3.8-litre direct injection engine produces 405PS of power and 400NM of torque and can power the sports car from 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds with the seven-speed manual gearbox; in 4.3 seconds with the seven-speed PDK double clutch automatic gearbox; and in 4.1 seconds with the Sport Chrono package. The manual gearbox gives the car a top speed of 300km/h while the autobox does equally well with a max speed of 298 km/h. The car also features the company’s Active Suspension Management system as well as a sport exhaust system.

The Porsche 911 50th anniversary edition will be available in three colours namely, metallic geyser grey, a darker graphite grey and black monochrome. While it is yet to make its Frankfurt debut, the 911 50th anniversary edition has a base price of Rs 1.72 crore (ex-showroom India) and is available for order as of now, with deliveries scheduled to begin in December 2013.
