Indian race car driver, Aditya Patel puts up an impressive performance in Round 1 of the International GT Open

Aditya Patel at the International GT Open Round 1

Following a successful season in the ADAC GT Masters last year, Aditya Patel resumes racing action with the 2014 International GT Open with a decent performance at the Nurburgring. Partnered with Cesar Campanico the duo took 13th and 11th place in Race 1 and 2 respectively.

Driving the Audi R8 LMS Ultra for Team Novadriver, the duo had a fantastic qualifying session, with Cesar taking fifth place on the grid for Race 1 and Patel securing sixth for the second race. Race 1 saw Campanico take the wheel first, maintain good pace to retain his position before handing over the wheel to the Indian racing driver. Unfortunately for the team, a decision to change the tyres during the race worked against them as Patel lost valuable three places to finish the race eighth in class.

However it seemed like Race 2 would prove to be a little more fruitful for the duo. This time round, it was Patel who took the wheel first and started from sixth place on the grid. The Chennai lad did well to retain his position till the pit-stop before handing over the wheel to Campanico. The Portuguese driver was going well fighting with the front-runners but could only manage to take the chequered flag in third place. Regrettably, the team was handed a 20-second penalty after the race as it was found that the Campanico left the pit-lane ahead of the stipulated time. The penalty dropped the team by three places down to sixth.

Despite getting in a race car after nearly 200 days and in fact getting behind the wheel for the first time on the race weekend itself without any prior pre-season test, the duo performed well to fight for the podium finish. It probably wasn’t the perfect weekend for Team Novadrivers but at least they can be rest assured of the pace that they have. The second race of the season is on June 8, at Portimao, Portugal.
