It was a tough but rewarding weekend for young Indian racer Parth Ghorpade at the penultimate round of Formula Pilota Championship at Sepang. The Eurasia Motorsport driver qualified 2nd for every race but was plagued by technical issues during the races.
On a wet track in Race 1, Parth got off to a brilliant start to get into the lead that he held for three laps before slipping off track owing to brake issues and falling to the back of the grid. Despite the adversity, he showed tremendous determination to fight back and finish fifth.
Brushing aside the disappointment of Race 1, Parth qualified in second position for Race 2 as well. As fate would have it, his car stalled, forcing him to retire.
Parth dropped from P2 to P4 at the start of Race 3 and it seemed that the podium would elude the racer from Kolhapur again. But in the final phase of the race he passed team-mate Sean Galeal to make it to the final step of the podium and score some hard-earned points. His third place also put him at the top in the Asian category to extend his lead in the class. His team-mate and overall championship leader Antonio Giovinazzi won all three races.
Parth later commented, “We had a really tough start to the weekend when we struggled to find the right balance for the car. Qualifying in 2nd position was definitely a surprise and had my best laps of the weekend. Antonio was untouchable the whole weekend but thought I should have finished on the podium in Race 1. In Race 2 the car just stalled and after that it was a really tough race. Race 3 was good, it was the best result I could have for the weekend. There is one more round left so hopefully things will be a lot better. Leading the Asian Championship is a great feeling so I will continue to push in the last round.”
