After heavy rainfall last week, Bonneville Salt Flats Course will not dry in time for the event

Bonneville Salt Flats Course under water

Heavy rain in the Salt Lake City area has put the Bonneville Salt Flat Course under water, unfortunately causing the Southern California Timing Association to cancel Speed Week.

“The SCTA Board is currently on the salt, and has determined that the standing water will not dry in time for us to hold our annual Speed Week event,” said a statement on the SCTA website. “The Board is also discussing the possibility of extending our next event – World Finals (Sep 30-Oct 3) into a full week of racing as a sort of delayed Speed Week. We thank you all for your patience and understanding. We look forward to seeing you at our next event.”

The Speed Week would have been the 100th anniversary of the first land speed record at the iconic venue and has been originally scheduled to start on Saturday, August 9, but had been delayed due to bad weather. Officials on-site at the salt flats had thought that the area could potentially dry out in time for the competition, but now that’s apparently not going to happen.

The Bonneville Salt Flats of Utah host a series of high speed races every year – in all, five major land speed events. Bonneville “Speed Week” takes place mid-August followed by “World of Speed” in September and the “World Finals” take place early October. These three events welcome cars, trucks and motorcycles.  The “Bub Motorcycle Speed Trials” are for motorcycles only.

The Southern California Timing Association and Utah Salt Flats Racing Association organizes and plans the multi-vehicle events, but all event promoters contribute to prepping and maintaining the salt flats.
