One million units of the Renault Duster have been produced since the first Duster rolled off the assembly line four years ago. The one millionth car was a white Duster produced at the Curitiba plant in Brazil.
The Duster is manufactured in five countries and marketed in over 100 countries. India was the fifth nation to start manufacturing the Duster. Till date, 85,974 units of the Duster have been produced at Renault’s Chennai plant for sale in India since May 2012, becoming Renault’s fourth largest market for this popular SUV. The Duster is also exported from here to South Africa and Indonesia as a Renault and to the United Kingdom, Cyprus, Malta and Ireland badged as a Dacia.
Besides India, the Duster is manufactured in Romania, Brazil, Columbia and Russia. Although Russian production started just a few months before India, it has become Renault’s largest market, producing 1.51 lakh units for sale only in the local market. That’s an average of 6,000 units every month.

The Duster with its muscular styling, no nonsense approach, keen pricing and competent package has all the ingredients of a successful model and it’s interesting to see its popularity as a global product. Markets like Brazil and Russia are very much like India so it’s understandable that the appeal will be similar, but evolved markets like France and Germany also taking well to the Duster makes it a good case study for a global car.
