The French carmaker has unveiled the Peugeot Quartz hybrid crossover concept ahead of its public debut at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. Peugeot claims that its Quartz plug-in hybrid concept mixes elements of a crossover vehicle and a saloon, to bring a new take on the SUV segment.
The exterior of the upcoming SUV features sharp lines and short overhangs. The new vehicle is 4,500mm long and 2,060mm wide, and rides on massive 23-inch wheels. The Peugeot Quartz SUV concept is built out of composite structure and bonded body panels which helps in keeping its weight low. LED headlights feature at the front and rear, with Peugeot’s lion badge featuring prominently as part of the front grille. A glass roof flows towards the rear wings and incorporates two spoilers to further enhance its aerodynamic design.
Inside, the new SUV receives an i-Cockpit design featuring a compact steering wheel with built-in controls for shifting gears, changing drive modes and using the indicators. The cabin also boasts a configurable head-up display with a central 45-degree polycarbonate strip providing extra info, along with four bucket seats that have an exposed seat structure and come with a four-point retractable harness.
Power for the plug-in hybrid comes from a 270PS 1.6-litre four-cylinder THP petrol engine which works in conjunction with two electric motors to deliver a combined output of 493PS. The engine is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The front electric motor uses regenerative braking to charge the 400-volt battery during deceleration and provides assistance to the combustion engine during gear changes.
Three driving modes are available, with the electric-only ZEV mode offering emissions-free driving. The ZEV mode offers an all-electric range of 50km while in Road mode the Peugeot Quartz uses the combustion engine and the front axle-mounted electric motor. Switching to Race mode will allow the concept to use the combined output of the THP engine and the two electric motors.
The Quartz concept also features a MacPherson suspension set-up at the front and a multi-link arrangement at the rear. The pneumatic suspension is automatically adjustable and offers a ground clearance varying between 300mm and 350mm.
The Peugeot Quartz concept will be on display at the 2014 Paris Motor Show alongside the French carmaker’s re-worked Peugeot Exalt, Peugeot 208 Hybrid Air and Peugeot 308 GT models.
