Here is another AMG Mercedes with the wrong badge, the CLS63 AMG. Everything else about it is spot on though

The Mercedes-Benz CLS was a good looking car from day one. It was the car that brought about the swooping design to the rear portion of the roof. It brought about a new sense of life to the design language of the monotonous four door sedan. The car also featured a comeback of pillar less doors to the four door sedan. In short the CLS was exactly the breath of fresh the four door sedan needed.

Then came the AMG versions, the 63 AMG packed in a sizeable 6.2 litre engine, and that car was the whole package really. Fantastic styling, great practicality and armed with enough firepower to thrill even the most revered supercar fan the CLS63 AMG had it all.

Now though there is a new CLS63 AMG that’s being unveiled, only it actually isn’t a 63 AMG at all. Somebody seems to have goofed up in the badge department as it is the same case with all the other recent 63 AMG cars from Merc. You see the previous version was called the CLS63 AMG because it had a 6.2 litre V8 engine, however the number 63 was put on it as a tribute to commemorate Mercedes’s first production V8 engine that displaced 6.3 liters. Anyway, back to the car. The new CLS has a downsized 5.5 litre twin turbo V8 for green reasons, so technically it should be called the 55 AMG.

Anyway, enough of the nitpicking as the rest of the car is spot on. Whichever way you look at it the CLS63 AMG is a great looking car. With its new swooping lines and curves the car looks more aggressive yet elegant enough to go to most places their owners will drive them to. As for the 5.5 litre V8, that develops 550 horsepower, 36 more than the 6.2 litre V8. That’s because the 6.2 unit was naturally aspirated while the new engine has twin turbochargers. The two turbochargers work in perfect aggression and synergy to negate turbo lag and ensure that the car performs just as well as the 63 AMG did. Technology is moving on and the CLS63 AMG has decided to keep with the times. Ofcourse, different people will have different opinions but the 5.5 litre V8 will do the car good.

The CLS63 AMG will also get AMG’s new seven speed gearbox. Armed with 590 lb-ft of torque the car will go from 0-100 km/h in 4.3 seconds and onwards to a top speed of 297.6 km/h. The car also gets a wider axle along with AMG’s independent adaptive suspension with electronic damping and a three stage traction control system. Also, hard to miss are the massive AMG wheels that barely fit, even with the flared wheel arches on the new CLS63 AMG.

AMG also plans a ‘Launch Edition’ for mid 2012 which will feature some carbon fibre, piano black interiors with different leather, AMG sports seats and a matte grey paint job.

But the best thing about the car is none of the things mentioned above. What we think is absolutely fantastic about the CLS63 AMG is its deep baritone exhaust note that makes all the hair on your head stand on end. Once you have heard it, no matter where you are or what you are doing, if a CLS63 AMG passes by anywhere near you, you will know.
