Race of Champions, an end-of-season annual event that brings together participants across major motorsport arenas including Formul1, MotoGP, 24 Hours of Le Mans, World Rally Championship and the likes, to compete against each other for the ‘Champion of Champions’ title. Behind the wheel of cars like the Ariel Atom, KTM X-Bow, Audi R8LMS, VW Polo RX and the RoC car, motorsport stars fought it out for the ultimate title. In this year’s iteration, 13-time Formula1 race winner, David Coulthard took the ‘Champion of Champions’ title while Team Nordic with Tom Kristensen and Petter Solberg won the Nations Cup.
But before the drivers, went out on track, they unfurled a banner in conjunction with the institute for advanced research into brain and spinal cord injuries ICM in honour of ROC’s absent friend Michael Schumacher as he continues his recovery from his skiing accident. Schumacher with compatriot Sebastian Vettel have won the Nations Cup six consecutive times prior to 2014.
On Day 1, Kristensen first defeated Williams F1 Official test driver Susie Wolff but team-mate Solberg couldn’t quite hold it right against Team Scotland’s Coulthard. Thankfully though, Kristensen made things a little easier in the decider by winning against the Brit. Host nation Team Barbados (Dane Skeete and Rhett Watson), too delighted fans with a superb RoC Nations Cup debut, making it through to the semi-finals before being beaten by Team Scotland. Meanwhile, Team Nordic defeated Team France air Romain Grosjean and Esteban Ocon by two heats to one to move into the finals. With two victories to one, Team Nordic took the 2014 Nations Cup title.
Day 2, saw 16 drivers battle it out for the ultimate title, but it was Coulthard who saw off Mercedes F1 official reserve driver Pascal Wehrlein to become Champion of Champions for the very first time. To start the proceedings, drivers were split into four groups battling for a position in the knockout stages. Coulthard had a great start and remained undefeated in his group against, Mick Doohan, Jamie Whincup and Romain Grosjean. Meanwhile, Nascar Sprint Cup Champion 2004 Kurt Busch, seven-time Off-road Champion Robby Gordon and 2014 Indy 500 winner Ryan Hunter-Reay moved ahead from Group B, C and D.
The quarter finals was a bad round for all the Americans as Hunter, Busch as well as Gordon were beaten by Ocon, Whincup and Wehrlin respectively. Coulthard piped Soberg and Whincup to move into the finals while Wehrlin defeated Ocon to graduate to the finals. But in the end it was the more experienced of the two drivers, Coulthard who defeated the Mercedes reserve driver Wherlin to claim the Champion of Champions title for 2014.
