Not to be outdone by Silicon Valley companies like Tesla Motors and Google, Nissan has shown off its own autonomous electric vehicle ahead of the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show. Dubbed the Leaf Piloted Drive 1.0 Concept and based on the first-generation Leaf EV, the concept will soon will begin autonomous testing at the Japanese company’s Advanced Technology Center located south of Tokyo.
The first step in Nissan’s plan to launch an autonomous vehicle by 2020, the Leaf Piloted Drive 1.0 Concept comes with an array of sensors and cameras to enable lane changes, merges on and off highways, and passing of vehicles without driver assistance. According to the official press release, this arsenal of semiautonomous systems is intended to make “occupants feel as though they were in the hands of a skilled driver.”
Visually, the concept still wears the bodywork of the current electric Leaf, albeit with modifications to accommodate the 12 cameras, four laser scanners, five radar sensors, plus ultrasonic sensors used to monitor the vehicle’s surrounds. Inside the boot of the Leaf Pilot Drive 1.0 resides the computer hardware that deciphers the information provided by the sensors. As for the powertrain, expect it to share the internals of the 2016 Leaf, which uses a new 30kW battery pack good for 107 miles (roughly 172 kms) of electric driving range.
We reckon that the Leaf Piloted Drive 1.0 Concept could very well serve as a preview of some sort to the next-generation Nissan Leaf, but that will be confirmed once the show doors to the Tokyo Motor Show flings open come October 29. The Drive 1.0 Concept will be shown alongside the Teatro for Dayz box car concept, which is expected to debut connectivity technologies targeted at millennials. Also on the docket for the Tokyo Motor Show is Nissan's Concept 2020 Vision Gran Turismo.
