Toyota to start production of hydrogen vehicles in December

Although the technology has been talked about for quite some time now, the concept of using hydrogen to power an automobile seems poised to finally hit the market. According to reports, Toyota Motor Corporation has recently declared that their sedan-type Fuel Cell Vehicle (FCV) will begin production at the end of this year. At the moment Toyota claims this would make them the first automaker in the world to market such a vehicle to the public at large.

The hydrogen fuel cell vehicle should be able to travel for long distances, giving it an advantage over electric vehicles. It also produces zero harmful emissions, as only water comes out of the tailpipe. Refueling takes just minutes, although the infrastructure for hydrogen vehicles is currently very limited. Toyota has stated that the company will not directly involve itself in expanding this network.

Production will start slowly – numbering just dozens a month – but Toyota hopes demand will quickly increase to the point where it can offer a hydrogen fuel cell car for an approximate price of Rs 17.75 lakh in the 2020s. Currently, Toyota has quoted an approximate price of Rs 47.40 lakh (exclusive of duties and taxes).

The FCV concept was unveiled at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, offering us a glimpse at the future of the kind of green technology that may power the majority of our cars one day. The FCV concept offers a driving range of more than 500km with just five kilos of hydrogen on board. Besides Toyota, Honda and Hyundai are also working on fuel cell vehicles.
