In order to match the overwhelming demand, Maruti plans to ramp up production

Vitara Brezza

India’s largest carmaker, Maruti Suzuki launched their all new offering- Vitara Brezza, in the compact SUV segment this year in March. The sub-4 meter SUV has been creating a lot of buzz ever since the first sketch of the car came out and now the waiting period of the same has gone over 9 months.

Maruti sold 5563 units of the Vitara Brezza in March and 7832 units in the month of April, surpassing the sales of its closest competitor, the Ford EcoSport. The car has currently garnered around 70,000 bookings while almost fifty percent of its bookings are for the top-end variant.

RS Kalsi, executive director (Marketing & Sales), Maruti Suzuki India, told Autocar Professional that the Gurgaon plant has capacity to produce around 8500 units of Vitara Brezza currently. He said, “The demand for the Vitara Brezza is more than we had expected and we are gradually ramping-up the production capacity for the SUV as a similar scale-up of capacity has to be taken up at the vendors’ end as well. It will take some time and should be completed in the second half of the year.”

RC Bhargava, chairman, Maruti Suzuki India expressing his concern about the matter said, “We had planned for around 100,000 units annually and are on track to reach that figure. For scaling-up, vendors also have to deliver at such short notice. If there are about 200 suppliers and even one or two don’t supply in time, production will be affected,” he had said. “Nowhere in the world are production schedules so flexible or resilient that they can make substantial increases within a short period.”

The Vitara Brezza was initially showcased at the 2016 Indian Auto Expo and was launched on March 8 this year. Powering the compact SUV is the tried and tested Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine that makes 90PS of max power along with 200Nm of peak torque. It is only available with a five-speed manual gearbox and also doesn’t have the option of a petrol engine.
