The Green Court has banned diesel vehicles older than 10 years in the Capital to keep the pollution level in check

NGT bans diesel vehicles older than 10 years in Delhi

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has decided to take aging diesel vehicles off the Delhi roads in a bid to improve air quality. Noting that diesel is a prime source of air pollution in the Capital, the Green Court has taken this decision.

A bench headed by NGT Chairperson, Justice Swatanter Kumar, stated that a number of countries such as Brazil, China and Denmark are in the process or have prohibited diesel vehicles or are in the process of doing away with them by imposing heavy taxes.

The bench also noted that certain stringent measures needed to be taken to ensure that residents of Delhi stay in good health. The Green Court directed that all diesel vehicles, heavy or light which are ten years old will not be permitted on the roads of Delhi and NCR.

The tribunal has pointed out that diesel is the prime source of air pollution in Delhi. Diesel fumes cause damage to the lungs and brain, thereby, increasing the risk of cancer. The Green Court stated that the situation in the Capital has become so alarming that medically people have been advised to leave Delhi.

The five-judge bench also pulled up the government for failing to keep the pollution in check. Earlier in November last year, the Green Court had directed the concerned authorities to take appropriate steps in accordance with law including seizure of such vehicles to keep the pollution in check.

The tribunal had also ordered the Regional Transport Office (RTO) not to renew or issue registration for such vehicles or provide them with fitness certificates.
