UPDATE: Everything you need to know about the 2018 Maruti Swift

Suzuki will launch the next-generation Swift Sport with a 1.4-litre Boosterjet petrol engine. The same engine is currently used in the Suzuki Vitara S that is sold in the international markets.

The 3-door Suzuki Sport is currently powered by a naturally aspirated 1.6-litre which puts out 138PS of max power. The 1.4-litre Boosterjet Swift Sport will most likely churn out around 142PS of power. The normal Swift will also get a 1.0-litre Boosterjet engine that currently powers the Baleno hatchback.

The Baleno RS with a 1.0-litre Boosterjet engine will be launched in India by this festive season. According to some reports, Maruti will also plonk in the same 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit in the Vitara Brezza which was only launched with a 1.3-litre multijet diesel engine.

If Maruti plans to launch the Swift Sport in India, it will compete against the Fiat Abarth Punto which is powered by a similar capacity (1.4-litre) turbocharged T-jet petrol engine and produces a similar power output. Yes, this hot hatchback will get the purists drooling but real world sales figures suggest that getting the Suzuki Swift Sport to India will not be very feasible for the carmaker. The Fiat Abarth Punto is an example of the same.

Currently, the Maruti Suzuki Swift is amongst the carmaker’s best-selling products in India and is available with an 84PS 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and a 75PS 1.3-litre multijet diesel engine.

Hyundai also showcased a sportier version of the i20 hatchback- i20 N Sport recently. It is powered by a 1.4-litre petrol unit which produces 115PS of power and is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Hyundai, like Maruti, has no plans to launch any powerful hatchback in India as of now.

Maruti might launch an automatic variant of the diesel-powered Swift hatchback later this year. Read more about it here.
