Set to be revealed at the 2012 Geneva International Motor Show, the new Volkswagen Golf GTI Cabriolet's 210PS of power makes it one smoking hot topless hatchback

Marking the return of a model last seen a decade ago, the new Golf Cabriolet is the most powerful iteration yet. Packaged with all the performance and practicality of the GTI hatchback, which was first produced in 1974 as a replacement of the Volkswagen Beetle, the new two-door four-seater adds the much-needed fun to drive in open-air, thanks to an electrically powered fabric roof which can be folded in just 9.5 seconds.

Taking forward the design cues of the classic GTI, the new Cabriolet is a highly desirable car. The radiator grille has a honeycomb structure with red edging and the GTI badge, while the front bumper incorporates a deep honeycomb air dam and distinctive vertical fog lights.  The look is further intensified with side sill extensions giving the GTI a wide and well-planted stance. But it is the smoked LED tail lights that complete the look of this Golf.

Styling on the interiors too is of top notch quality where four individual seats are covered in the classic tartan ‘Jacara’ cloth upholstery, steering wheel is wrapped in leather, handbrake and gear lever gaiter are finished with contrasting red stitching while the hood lining and roof pillar trims are all finished in black.

Under the hood is the same 2.0-litre turbocharged, four-cylinder engine found in the GTI hatchback, mated to either a standard six-speed manual gearbox or optional six-speed dual-clutch DSG gearbox producing 210PS.

As with all Golf Cabriolet models, the GTI comes with automatically deploying rollover protection, front and side head/thorax airbags and a driver’s knee airbag as standard, all of which helped it to achieve a five-star (96 percent) rating for adult occupancy in Euro NCAP crash tests. The car goes on sale in the UK in the second half of the year.
