The new Skoda Octavia vRS ticks all the right boxes with its subtle but distinct styling and a range of 2.0-litre turbocharged engines

New Skoda Octavia vRS

When the original Skoda Octavia vRS went on sale in India, it was revered by enthusiasts across the nation. Its 1.8 litre turbocharged petrol engine developed 180PS of power and 235Nm of torque, performance stats that were unmatched by any other car in its segment or price range. That coupled with the first generation Octavia’s handsome looks, different alloys, vRS badging and sleek rear spoiler made it one of the most desirable cars in the country.

Fast forward to 2013 and Skoda has revealed the third generation Octavia vRS. One look and straight away you can tell that Skoda has done an excellent job at working the styling details on this car. It maintains the original car’s conservative looks and the vRS additions are rather well balanced too in being sporty but not flamboyant.

Compared to the standard model, the new Skoda Octavia vRS has a new front bumper with a bigger air dam featuring a honeycomb grille and sleeker fog lamps, a lower ride height, new sporty alloy wheels that can be ordered in 17, 18 or 19 inch sizes, red brake calipers, the rear bumper gets a large black air diffuser the top of which has a red reflector strip and incorporates twin trapezoidal chrome exhaust pipes at either end. The car also gets bi xenon headlights and LED tail lights.

Trademark design cues include the green, red and silver vRS badges on the front grille and boot lid and that sleek vRS rear spoiler on the bootlid. The station wagon version of the new Octavia vRS gets a roof-edge spoiler.

The interiors of the new Octavia vRS gets new ambient lighting for the door handles, RS-design sports seats, a sporty 3-spoke steering wheel with perforated leather, stainless steel pedals and the instrument panel gets a new RS design while RS badges adorn the steering wheel, gear lever, seats, door sill panels and floor mats.

All those styling tweaks and RS badges are justified by the powertrain options that the new Skoda Octavia vRS can be specified with. When the car goes on sale, it will be available with a choice of petrol and diesel engines, both of which are shared with the current avatar of the iconic Volkswagen Golf GTI and GTD.

First up is the 2.0 litre TSI petrol engine that generates 223PS of power and is mated to a six-speed manual gearbox both of which when worked to optimum can catapult the car from 0-100 km/h in 6.8 seconds and onwards to a top speed of 248 km/h. The diesel engine is also a 2.0 litre unit that develops 186PS of power and can go from 0-100 km/h in 8.1 seconds and onwards to a top speed of 232 km/h. The new Skoda Octavia vRS is still a front wheel drive car and comes with sports suspension as standard.

All in all, the 2013 Octavia vRS is a thoroughly exciting car that is armed with adequate performance and rather attractive styling that will have enthusiasts hooked. The car will make its world debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on the July 10, 2013.

The 2013 Skoda Octavia is slated for a late 2013 India launch and is quite the looker too even without the RS styling. The styling is conservative but the lines are very contemporary making it a rather handsome car like the first generation model.
