We take you one step at a time through the eight variants of the new Scorpio

New Mahindra Scorpio variants details

Mahindra has launched the new Scorpio with much fanfare, and the SUV has been received equally well by car buyers of India. But, there are eight variants with different features, two- and four-wheel drive options, and price ranging between Rs 7.97 lakh to 12.54 lakh. So, which one should you buy? We dissect the various trims of the New Mahindra Scorpio to help you pick the one that fits your needs perfectly.

New Mahindra Scorpio S2 variant

Price: Rs 7.97 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai)

The ‘S2’ is the no-frills base version of the New Scorpio. Being the most affordable model on offer this is a completely stripped down version. What makes it visibly different from the top-spec model is that the New Scorpio S2 comes without LED ‘eyebrow’ DRL, chrome accents in front grille, ski rack or the spoiler. Also, the front and rear bumpers are unpainted, the fender bezel and the number plate appliqué are black in colour, while the foot-step is silver in coloured.

The rear stop-lamp comes with conventional bulbs, instead of LEDs. This variant comes equipped with 15-inch steel rim wheels shod 215/75 R15 radials. The overall height of the New Scorpio S2 is 1,930mm, which is 65mm lower than other variants, mainly due to the smaller wheels.

Inside, the cabin comes with basic air-conditioning system, vinyl seats, seven or nine seating arrangement, manual ORVMs and the power window switch is located on the centre console. Feature wise, the base S2 trim comes with a 12v charging point and a manual central locking. The new Scorpio S2 is the only variant which comes with a 2.5-litre m2DICR 4-cylinder, turbo charged, common rail diesel engine, tuned to produce 76PS of peak power at 3,200rpm and 200Nm of maximum torque between 1,400-2,200rpm. This is the perfect vehicle for those seeking a no-nonsense work horse at a very affordable price.

New Mahindra Scorpio S4 variant

Price:  Rs 8.59 lakh (ex-showroom Mumbai)

The next variant is the S4 trim and the big change here is the more powerful 2,179cc mHawk VGT equipped common rail diesel motor capable of 121.7PS power at 4,000rpm, and 280Nm of torque produced between 1,800-2,800rpm. But, unlike the S2 trim, the S4 does not have the micro hybrid technology.

Though, it looks similar to the S2 version, the S4 comes with larger 17-inch steel wheels. Inside, it features a collapsible steering column and side intrusion beam, vinyl seats with fabric inserts, 12v charging points for front and second row.

Moreover, the New Scorpio S4 is the only model besides the top-end S10 version which comes with the option of a shift-on-fly four wheel drive system at Rs 1.21 lakh extra. So, if you are looking for robust performance, better ground clearance (due to the 17-inch wheels) than the base S2 trim, and strong off-road ability then the S4 variant is what you should be looking at.

The New Scorpio S6 comes with plenty of features apart from the ones seen in the lower S4 and S2 trims, such as the voice assist system, 2 Din audio system with USB and AUX ports, remote central locking and follow-me-home headlamps. It also gets panic brake indication, anti-theft warning, seat belt reminder lamp and auto door lock while driving.
