During a recent interaction with Mahindra officials they had hinted us that they are working on a new 150cc motorcycle on offer. Further details like the product positioning or the target audience of the bike wasn’t revealed much was left for speculation. But the assumptions have been laid to rest as pictures of the upcoming Mahindra 150cc motorcycle has been posted on the internet. The new Mahindra 150cc motorcycle will be a bare and basic 150cc commuter which is most likely positioned for the rural market. The styling of the motorcycle is simple with a round headlamp, ordinary looking fuel tank and spoke wheels. The instrument cluster is an analogue unit with speedometer, odometer, fuel gauge and tell-tale lights. There’s also a rack provided at the rear for carrying luggage given the fact it has been focussed on rural markets, where most of the owners prefer to use a motorcycle to transports light goods.

No details on the powerplant have been revealed by Mahindra but it is rumoured that the new bike will be powered by a 155cc, single-cylinder motor. The air-cooled motor is expected to generate around 15PS of power and around 13Nm of peak torque. The powerplant will be mated to a 4-speed transmission likely to keep cost low but Mahindra can surprise us with a 5-speed gearbox. The frame for the motorcycle will be an all new diamond type construction. Suspension duties on the new Mahindra 150cc bike are handled by telescopic front forks and a twin shock unit at the rear.

Being a commuter offering, braking is done by drum brakes on both the ends. Mahindra currently has the Centuro 110cc bike in the commuter segment which hasn’t really lived up to expectations. The Mahindra Mojo has been positioned as a premium performance motorcycle. Mahindra will be banking on the new 150cc motorcycle in increasing its sales given that it has been positioned for the rural market. Mahindra as a brand enjoys a goodwill among the rural buyers and it can use its dealer network of farm and equipment, along with passenger vehicles for sale of the new motorcycle. We can expect the Mahindra 150cc motorcycle to be priced around Rs 45,000 to Rs 50,000 ex-showroom.
