Auto giant blames the slump on slow economy and weakening rupee. Chief Executive, Automotive Division, calls for reduction in excise duty

Mahindra & Mahindra has announced its auto sales numbers for July 2013, which stood at 37,096 units as against 47,059 units during July 2012, a decline of 21.17 per cent.

The passenger vehicles segment which include ‘Utility Vehicles’ and the Verito saw a sale of 15,530 units in July 2013, compared to 22,011 units during same month last year. The 4-wheeler commercial segment (passenger and load vehicles) sold 13,740 units and the 3-wheeler segment clocked 4,490 units in July 2013.

While exports took the worst hit with a whopping 39 per cent decline pulling sales down to 2,606 units in July 2013 from the year-ago period, the company suffered on the domestic front as well with just 34,490 units sold in July 2013 as against 42,799 units in July 2012.

Speaking about the monthly performance, Pravin Shah, Chief Executive, Automotive Division, Mahindra & Mahindra, said, “Over the last few months, the auto industry has been going through one of its worst phases of the last decade with planned shutdowns being taken by companies to correct demand-supply mismatch. The industry is in desperate need for an immediate stimulus from the government.

"With interest rates remaining unchanged and the rupee plunging to new lows, lowering of excise duty is the need of the hour which will rev up demand for auto products, leading up to the festive season."
