Mercedes-Benz will soon rename their whole SUV and Sportscar range to bring it in line with the sedan nomenclature

Mercedes-Benz to rename SUV and sportscar range

Mercedes-Benz has decided to rename their SUV and sportscar range in sync with their sedan range in order to bring a sense of symmetry. Most products will adhere to the A, C, E and S range but will be offered with different bodystyles. The first model range to be renamed will be SUVs followed by sportscar and coupe offerings.

All SUVs will start with the GL prefix apart from the G-Class, which will maintain its original identity. The new recently launched Mercedes-Benz GLA has already been named with that idea in mind and the largest offering, the GL might soon get the GLS identity. The ML-Class will not be renamed to GLE from the next generation onwards. There will also be a GLE Coupe that will go up against the likes of the BMW X6.

Coming to the sportscar range, the next generation SLK will most probably be renamed SLC, paying homage to the SLCs of the 1980s. The SL will retain its nomenclature as it is considering the history and tradition behind it. There are also plans for a lower range sportscar called the SLA, which will be based on the A-Class platform. The top of the line supercar, the newly launched AMG GT will not adhere to this new naming tradition and will be a separate entity altogether.

Coupe versions of the new C-Class will continue to be called the CLC whereas the upcoming 2016 E-Class coupe could be named the CLE. The B-Class, R-Class and V-Class will continue to be called as they are as they cater to very specific and practicality oriented audiences.
