Volvo is reportedly working on new three-cylinder engines which will go into production later this year. The three-pod motor will be more fuel efficient and are likely to power all smaller Volvo cars.
So expect them to be bolted under the bonnet of sedans up to the S60, sportswagon tills the V60 and even in smaller XC range of SUVs.
Derik Crabb, who lead’s Volvo’s global powertrain development, has indicated that once electric engines are more commercially viable, the three-cylinder engines will provide creating building blocks for charging higher-power electrics.
The three-cylinder engines may make their way into India, and would help in reducing the prices of Volvo cars in India, considering all Volvo products are CBUs as of now, since the company doesn’t have a manufacturing or assembly base here.
